This portrait’s sitter, a Viennese actor named Maximilian Korn, poses elegantly in fine clothing with his finger holding his place in a book, as if he has just been interrupted while reading.

Artist Ferdinand Georg WaldmĂĽller, no stranger to the theater himself, honed his skill as a painter by copying well-known works in Dresden, Rome, and Vienna while on tour with his wife, Katharina Weidner, a successful opera singer.

Here, WaldmĂĽller updated the traditional Renaissance portrait with a landscape background by integrating the sitter into his organic surroundings: Korn leans on a mossy rock and basks in the same sunlight that illuminates the distant mountains.

The name Renoir is closely associated with paintings of dancers, the celebration of life, and the enjoyment of leisure, which makes "Seascape" and its storm-tossed ocean quite unusual and unexpected.

For his landscapes, Renoir preferred sunny days with blue skies and calm winds; rarely do we see unsettled weather. In this work, the overcast sky, churning surf, and blue tones convey a sense of sea-drenched cold with astonishing effectiveness.

Born on this day in 1844, Mary Cassatt was a trailblazing artist.

In the late 1880s through the early 1900s, Cassatt pursued ambitious and experimental work, exploring the theme of mothers and caretakers with children, creating complex color prints, and undertaking an unprecedented mural commission for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Join us on September 6 for the first exhibition at the Art Institute dedicated to the fiercely independent female maker in more than 25 years, "Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism."
