The DuSable is proud to celebrate Haitian Heritage Month & Haitian Flag Day with a look back at the consequential contributions of Haitian Americans to the city of Chicago, and especially showing love to our very namesake: Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable. 🇭🇹✊🏾 Frankly, there would be no Chicago without him, and to this day the vibrant Haitian community in our city is emblematic of Black pride, resilience and triumph.

We encourage you to learn more and celebrate with the Haitian American Museum of Chicago . Be sure to stop by and continue exploring more about this rich and impactful history.

Introducing The Black Imagination Abroad — a new artist salon series presented as part of the ongoing public programming for the exhibition Paris in Black: Internationalism and the Black Renaissance at The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center.

Hosted by Danny Dunson, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Arts Education, the series invites contemporary artists into conversation around Black internationalism, artistic practice, image-making, cultural exchange, and the evolving creative landscapes of the African diaspora.

We are proud to launch the inaugural salon with Chicago artist and creative director Austyn Wyche , whose recent photographic work created in Paris offers a compelling contemporary meditation on Black presence abroad.

The first Monday in May marks the Met Gala—this year themed “Costume Art” with the dress code “Fashion is Art.” 🖼️

The DuSable Museum begins a series exploring Black art and fashion as embodied practice. Lorraine O’Grady’s Art Is… (1983) framed Black life as art, while Mississippi-born designer Patrick Kelly—whose career flourished in Paris—extended that language through fashion. Tracee Ellis Ross later carried the frame onto the Met carpet as adornment and assertion.

This lineage continues in Lupita Nyong’o’s 2019 Met Gala look, where gold “power to the people” hair picks formed a sculptural crown—echoing Lauren Kelley’s Picken (1999).

Black art moves beyond the canvas—into the body, into fashion, and into view. 🤎

Chicago is taking the global stage. 🌍🎷
As the official host city for the 15th Anniversary of UNESCO’s International Jazz Day, we’re honored that The DuSable is one of the spaces bringing this celebration to life.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28, as we kick off International Jazz Day Week, we open our doors for an evening of live jazz at The DuSable.
Step inside Paris in Black, where sound, history, and movement come together.
We are excited to welcome the Chicago Jazz Institute’s Youth Orchestra, Jazz Links a powerful reflection of legacy in motion and the next generation shaping the future of this global sound.
This is more than a night of music.
It’s Chicago in conversation with the world.
A reminder that jazz transcends borders, languages, and time.
