We're saddened to hear about the closure of the DePaul Art Museum (DPAM). As a fellow Catholic university art museum in Chicago, we understand the impact exhibitions and programming can have on our communities and the important role of campus museums in facilitating students' cultural engagement. DPAM was a key partner in our recent exhibition, "Freedom In Form: Rich Hunt," through their loan of four early Hunt sculptures. As a show of support, please consider signing this letter written by DePaul faculty members.

Lunar Disc I is a work by Emily Young, who is hailed as "Britain's greatest living stone sculptor". Standing 6 feet tall, it is made of one-billion-year-old, semi-translucent onyx. Of her discs, she has said, "The discs, lunar or solar, are also like angels, heavenly bodies, stars, whirling in dark space, carrying information about our origins and throwing out light to us."

Madonna and Child with Cherubs, ca. 1650
Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Il Sassoferrato
Italian, Oil on Canvas, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kowar, 1980-02

Sassoferrato was a Roman Baroque painter who is perhaps best known for his many luminous and pious images of the Virgin. This image endows the Virgin and Child with human qualities and celebrates the bond between mother and infant. This bond is emphasized by the manner in which the Virgin embraces the Christ Child, resting her cheek on his head. The background setting, however, with gold, celestial clouds, leaves no doubt as to the heavenly status of the figures.
