“I’d cry my eyes violet, Elizabeth Taylor. Tell me for real, do you think it’s forever?” - Taylor Swift 💜

Movie star Elizabeth Taylor earned her first starring role at age 12 in 1944’s “National Velvet,” prompting LIFE Magazine to tout her as “the most accomplished junior actress” of her time. Within 15 years, Taylor went from young starlet to one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood.

Despite being the highest-paid movie star of the 1960s, winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress, and her humanitarian work with HIV/ AIDS, Taylor is perhaps most popularly remembered for her relationships with men, including her seven husbands.

This portrait of her, in the collection of our National Portrait Gallery USA, was taken in 1948 when Taylor was 16 years old. That year, she starred in “A Date with Judy” and “Julia Misbehaves.”
