Happy Monday, friends and fellow Gere enthusiasts! As we look out over the frosty Chicago skyline today, December 29th, we are reflecting on a truly "blockbuster" moment in cinematic history that happened right around this time of year.

Did you know that tomorrow, December 30th, marks the anniversary of the wide release of the 2002 masterpiece "Chicago"? 🎭🎶

While our museum is nestled at the very top of the Willis Tower, we always feel a special connection to this film. Richard Gere’s performance as the silver-tongued lawyer Billy Flynn didn't just capture our hearts—it earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor! 🏆

To celebrate this milestone, our curators have done something special for our visitors:

The Tap-Dance Tribute: We’ve highlighted the original "Razzle Dazzle" costume in our main gallery.

Musical Matinee: We’ll be playing the "Chicago" soundtrack throughout the museum today to keep that high-energy, 1920s spirit alive 103 floors in the air.

Golden Views: If you visit us near sunset, the golden hour hitting the city below perfectly mirrors the "Golden Globe" glow of Richard’s iconic win.

Dear friends and esteemed guests of the Richard Gere Museum,

Please accept our most sincere apologies for the long silence.

It has been nearly a year since our last dispatch, and for that, we are truly sorry. We've been so busy maintaining the exhibits and, frankly, getting lost in the incredible views from our home here atop the Willis Tower, that we have shamefully neglected our community. We hope you can forgive our absence.

We wanted to break this silence on a day of significance, and today is just that.

This week, we are celebrating the upcoming 28th anniversary of the thrilling blockbuster 'The Jackal', which premiered in theaters on November 14, 1997!

This film holds a special place in the Gere canon. It gave us one of his most complex and rugged portrayals as Declan Mulqueen, the imprisoned IRA sniper brought out of confinement to hunt the only man who could match his skills. His gravitas (and that impeccable Irish-American accent) was the steady anchor of the entire film.

To celebrate, we will be polishing the glass on the 'Jackal' exhibit—which, in our permanent collection, features the very wool coat he wore while tracking his quarry—and playing the film's score softly in the West-facing observatory.

We have missed you all. We promise to be more present and share more artifacts, trivia, and stunning sunset photos from 103 floors above Chicago. Thank you for your continued support.

90th Birthday Message

On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism.

I am just a simple Buddhist monk; I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday I wish to share some thoughts.

While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place.

As for myself, I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much potential to contribute to the world through its emphasis on peace of mind and compassion.

I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold.

As long as space endures,
As long as sentient being remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.

Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion.
