What happens when we look beyond the image and toward the surface itself?

Using graphite pencil, colored pencil, marker, crayon and pen, Marvin Young builds large-scale drawings from multiple sheets of paper secured together to create an expanded field for drawing. Many works are double-sided, asking us to slow down and consider the drawing as both image and object.

Creases, folds and ripples remain visible from transport and handling. Rather than hidden, these marks of movement become part of the work, tracing process, time and touch across each surface.

Explore “Impressions of a City: Drawings by Marvin Young” this weekend and spend time with the details.

What stories do monuments tell, and whose stories have been left out? Our newest exhibition, Monumental: Sculpture by Dr. Charles Smith, invites us to consider these questions through the work of Dr. Charles Smith. Grounded in anti-monumentalism, Smith’s sculptures challenge traditional ideas of who and what we commemorate, honoring histories, cultural moments and everyday lives too often missing from public memory.

Across the museum, new exhibitions invite you to see and connect in meaningful ways. Experience the expansive cityscapes of Marvin Young, where the rhythm and scale of urban life unfold across sweeping drawings. Encounter the whimsical magic of Bill Brady’s sculptures, where playful forms spark surprise. And explore the vibrant collection shaped by Jan Petry’s impeccable eye, who reminds us that “part of the pleasure of collecting is sharing it with everyone.”

Have you heard about the IAM Teacher Fellowship?

Each school year, Intuit Art Museum welcomes a cohort of Chicago Pre-K–12th grade teachers to explore the history and contemporary practices of self-taught artists, bringing new ideas, techniques and inspiration back into their classrooms.

We’re celebrating the incredible educators who nurture curiosity, imagination and expression every day.

Celebrate with us on Sat, May 16, 3–5 pm as we honor our AMAZING 2025–2026 Fellows and see the inspiring work made in their classrooms at our annual Teacher Fellowship Student Exhibition.

Come experience the power of art education and the teachers who make it possible.

Images 1–6: Artwork by Teacher Fellows Jean Fitzgerald and Annamaria Castellucci Cabral’s students from Taft High School. Artist Alfonso “Piloto” Nieves Ruiz inspired students to create figural sculptures using materials from their everyday lives to answer the question, “What are you made of?”
