What happens when we look beyond the image and toward the surface itself?
Using graphite pencil, colored pencil, marker, crayon and pen, Marvin Young builds large-scale drawings from multiple sheets of paper secured together to create an expanded field for drawing. Many works are double-sided, asking us to slow down and consider the drawing as both image and object.
Creases, folds and ripples remain visible from transport and handling. Rather than hidden, these marks of movement become part of the work, tracing process, time and touch across each surface.
Explore “Impressions of a City: Drawings by Marvin Young” this weekend and spend time with the details.
