A garden can hold a family’s story, a neighborhood’s history, and an artist’s lifelong practice.
When Chinatown Square opened in 1993, it created much-needed space for Chinatown to grow. Nearby townhouses gave many Chinese American families their first opportunity to own a home with a garden. Andy Hoi-Csiu Chan and his family were among them.
Andy transformed his garden into a living studio. He grew vegetables, flowers, lotus, and gourds; sketched from life; and taught his students to paint from what they saw. He also designed a small Chinese garden with a pond, pine trees, scholar’s stones, koi, and goldfish.
Since Andy’s passing, his wife Amy has continued to care for the garden with tremendous love, bringing in an abundant harvest each year.
