i have newfound respect for vendors who consistently work markets. it knocked me out. but i’m looking forward to wheeling to cart out for more events like this while our brick and mortar is under construction.

Our building is still under construction for the foreseeable future, so I asked my pal and Chico printmaker Brandon Hernandez () to fill our windows for the fall. He asked for “marigold orange” backing paper and it looks so goooood.

In the right windows, Brandon’s hung a selection of his woodcut panels. His work draws from the visual language of Mexican Revolution-era artists, bridging “a personal gap between identity and heritage, continuing a long story of resilience and resistance.”

In the left window, Hernandez will curate a collection of work by other California printmakers, which we’ll hang up this week.

Artist Brandon Hernandez and Second Cousin director Mattie Hinkley will be out front handing out candy and chatting art on Friday, October 31, 2025 from 2-5pm. 🍭

CHICO ZINE FAIR WORKSHOPS

From fun to informative, we’ve got it all. All workshops are free, and last between 30-45 minutes. Here’s the rundown:

12pm—Migra Watch: ICE Watch Hotline Training with NorCal Resist. Build power not panic!

1pm—Cartooning Your Enemies: Drawing Workshop with Brian McNamara

2pm—Dimensions of Wellness with Sun-Hi. This workshop covers psychological safety, what’s important for your needs, and tools on clarifying boundaries. This is a permission slip to not try to change yourself.

3pm—Encyclopedia of the Future: Collective zine-making with Marin Hambley, co-organizer of Chico Zine Fest!

4p—Is it trash?? A Jeopardy-like quiz show on memes, symbols, archival and academia work. What’s your name? Where are you from? And are you ready to win big in Chico Zine Fair’s own quiz show?? Amelia Madarang from The Rat’s Cake will host a Jeopardy like quiz show to see if you can tell what is trash and what is treasure on a variety of topics related to her work. Prizes available.

There’s a really lovely article about Second Cousin in the current issue of Upgraded Living! Thank you to Matthew Sylvia for the kind and hopeful words, I hope we can live up to them.

The funny thing about this article is that it’s driven some folks to come over and check out the space. Which is great, except WE’RE NOT OPEN! Oops!!! Our bad!!! We’re hosting Chico Zine Fair on Saturday 1/25 but that’s it! We’ll be shut down for construction for a long time, so follow us here for updates.

ZINEMAKERS: get those last-minute applications in! We’ll make final decisions on Monday!!

Chico Zine Fair will be held on January 25th from 11am-5pm at Second Cousin. It will be free, all-ages, and open to the public. Zinemakers can apply either individually or as a collective. Form link in the ol’ bio.

CRAFT AID results:

Combining the total sales from the silent auction, live screen prints, and drinks, Craft Aid raised a total of $3,781.45!!!

We have chosen to donate these funds to the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF+), which provides craft artists with support and resources for disaster and emergency relief, education programs, and readiness grants to strengthen preparedness. Visit or cerfplus.org for more info.
