This is our application for the sliced bread contest. Contest is held Saturday, June 13, 2026. Drop off is 8am to 10am. Judging starts thereafter. Winners announced and bread tasting at 1pm.

You may pick up copies of this form at the museum anytime (weekdays 10-4, weekends 1-4), or you may fill out at drop off on June 13, or it's on our website and will be on social media a few more times if you want to print your own.

FAQ:
-Yes, you need one form per item. I'd fill out the top, then make your own copies for ease of use.
-What is the age for youth 17 years and 364 days is youth. 18 years is adult.
-Which category: if it has yeast it will always be in yeasted even if you might think of it as another category. If there is no yeast and the primary additions are sweet it's sweet, same for savory. Raspberry jalapeno for example, we'd look at amount of ingredients, but if it was Raspberry jalapeno and the bread had yeast it will always be yeasted.
-What about other things like cinnamon rolls or buns? WE LOVE THEM! Just make sure to have at least four of each item. One for each judge and one for display.
-Can I take my bread home afterward instead of letting people eat it? Sure! Just know the judges, with clean hands, have touched it and cut from it
-I don't care about the awards, I just want to eat bread. Great! Come at 1:15pm and bring a bag or tupperware. We always have leftovers and we hate to throw them away.
-Why do you want my recipe? Will someone steal it? No, it's to know every item in the piece so that we can make sure it's homemade and also in the case of an allergic reaction.

We were blessed to have Mrs Graupman’s middle school class stop by yesterday during CMS Cares to help us with lots of cleaning and organizing. Now, we won’t say who was extra helpful as I don’t want more added to their chores, but the whole lot of 21 of them got more done in the first hour than I thought they’d do all day, so I quickly added a dozen more projects that they completed quickly and efficiently. One star even mopped 90% of the museum himself because he was in the zone. Truly grateful for this project. Thanks CMS!

Will you help us undergird the Bethel AME Black History Church on our museum campus with a grant match that helps us raise the necessary $7,964.00 we need to complete this project? Every dollar helps us get to our goal.

If you'd like to be part of this project we'd appreciate any dollar amount you could help us with:
https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/donate-to-continue-our-mission-in--2026

Zeffy features 100% free donations for non-profits. It will auto-populate to offer for you, the donor, to offset the card processing, but that can be amended to $0 so that all funds go directly to the Grand River Museum's undergirding of the Bethel AME Black History Church Museum.

Traditional donations may be sent by mail:

We are looking for a few great volunteers. Not looking to get tied down with a regular schedule during retirement? We get it! We are open to "pop-up" days that suit your busy schedule.

We are especially looking for volunteer docents to open our museum on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm and a few Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm. But if you're available during the week, we have many fun projects then, as well.

You would receive training to help you navigate the museum. Some weekends are very busy and some are very quiet, so it's also a good time to meet new people, chat about our local history, or sometimes to read a book and relax in our lovely air conditioning. Please call or email if you might be interested. We are also open to students home from college for summer. We'd love at least a once per month commitment, if possible.

We have just received the Missouri Humanities initial grant payout for our Bethel AME Black History Church grant. Now comes the first part of our work, to fundraise the grant match of $7,964.00 to get this project fully funded.

This grant and match helps shore up our sagging century-old pews, adds technology for future arts performances, and helps us renovate our Ron Wilder Traditional Arts Center on the lower level with antique furniture, storage, and a fresh coat of paint. Another cost here is helping make the building more ADA friendly by creating an outdoor railing for our new concrete stairs and making the interior stairs to the downstairs bathrooms much safer and secure.

But the primary focus of this grant is a semi-permanent exhibit dedicated to the Black community of Chillicothe. This will replace our current exhibit that is more nationally focused. It will also include regular updates from the Smithsonian SITES traveling exhibit collection.

Overall this is a $30,000 project and we are honored to be selected by Missouri Humanities for a large portion of that funding.

If you'd like to be part of this project we'd appreciate any dollar amount you could help us with:

What an eventful Saturday! We started at 830am with Chillicothe Rotary planting a butterfly and pollinator garden near our front sign. Then at 2pm the local Scouts gathered for their Ten Commandments tour of churches including our Bethel AME Black History Church Museum. Several groups visited in between and 3pm saw a family trip tour come through who have been researching their family connections to Chillicothe. Overall, a very busy Saturday at the museum. Come by to see the wildflowers out front that have already attracted MANY bees!

We had 18 very attentive friends visit us from Mrs. Beemer's Second Grade Class yesterday. They have been our Partners in Education this year. We've learned about archaeology and what goes into a museum, then yesterday they got to spend the morning touring our museum and learning the history of Chillicothe. There were so many questions, which is very exciting for a Curator. They each got to take home one of our souvenir pennies from our penny press machine. What a fun morning! PS they willingly "went to jail" for a quick photo because each one was very well behaved.

Our Quarterly Program last night was stellar. Linda Steward spoke on the historic Black churches in Chillicothe. Brenda O’Halloran and Doug Doughty then spoke on their upcoming book about Vasco Graham, a Chillicothe native. Dinner was a delicious fried chicken meal from Julie and Paula over at the Elks. We had a fantastic turnout and the program was so fascinating. Thanks to the presenters and all who attended!
