In conjunction with the opening of our new exhibit, we are also implementing our new branding!

Our goal is to consolidate the disparate collections in our possession under a singular mission to better serve our community with richer stories and exciting programing.

Part of this will involve combining the separate social media accounts for the two museum buildings into one account starting next week. (Please know your social media manager is weeping tears of happiness over this news!) Be sure you are following Gallup Museum as that will be our singular account going forward!

We're very excited to announce that our new exhibit will be opening 2 August 2024!

"50 Years of Art and Activism" uses images, objects, and videos to explore the origins of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial that we know today. The exhibit will explore the reasons why Gallup was chosen as the home of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial and the key players in that decision. It will also critically examine the first 50 years of the Ceremonial's existence, during which it had to grapple with exponential growth, tension with various Indigenous groups, eviction from their longtime venue, and the rapid modernization of the 20th century.

If you have stopped by the museum this week you will have seen this sign on the old timeline exhibit...because we are installing something new!

The exhibits in the museum haven't changed in about 20 years, and we are very excited to start the process of updating them all. Our first installation will be a brief history of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial which will open August 1st.

You will also notice our new logo. More information on it and the consolidation of our museums is coming soon as well!

Today's object is a beautiful black and white pottery shard of Ancestral Puebloan origin.

While we have a fair number of ladle bowls that are missing handles, this is our only handle that is missing a bowl! This artifact was found during archeological work in Heaton Canyon.

Today's object is a small intact ladle of Hopi origin.

Almost all of the ladles in our collection are of Ancestral Puebloan origin, which makes this one particularly unique for us.

Today's object is one of which we have multiple examples (in both museum collections!). This is a brick made at the Gallup Fire Brick Company.

The Gallup Fire Brick Company used to be located where the Gallup Brickyard Bike Park is today.

Today's object is a very boldly decorated bowl of Ancestral Puebloan origin.

Today's object is a well-used bowl of Ancestral Puebloan origin.

It has been decorated with mineral paint and slip and has several fire clouded spots.

Today's object takes us quite far from yesterday's item.

This vibrantly colored wool hat comes from South America. Previous research indicates that it was probably made in either Bolivia or Peru.

Today's object is one of our very largest!

This totem pole originates from the Pacific Northwest and is extremely compelling with its vibrant colors and intricate details.

Today's object is a large fe**sh that is supposedly in the shape of a wolf.

We love this particular fe**sh because his painted on face makes us smile every time we see it. He's very fierce!
