Richard Norris Williams (pictured on right) saw his father, Charles Duane Williams, and many others crushed by the forward funnel as it collapsed and narrowly avoided being crushed himself. Waves washed him toward a collapsible lifeboat and after clinging to its side for some time, he was hauled aboard. He and the other occupants were later transferred to lifeboat 14. He had extreme damage to his legs and doctors wanted to amputate both, but Williams refused and was determined to get use of his legs back. Two months later, Richard Norris Williams won the US Open. 🎾
