May 23, 1862: On this date in Reds history, William “Dummy” Hoy was born in Houcktown, OH. An outfielder, Hoy played for the Reds from 1894 to 1897 and again in 1902. Hoy lost his hearing at a young age but overcame this obstacle to become one of the top players of his day. A lifetime .288 batter over 14 major league seasons, Hoy also possessed tremendous speed and was considered one of the best defensive center fielders of his era. At the time of his death in 1961, the 99-year-old Hoy was the oldest living former major league player. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2003.

: At the age of 99, Hoy was baseball’s oldest living player when he was called on to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day at Crosley Field in 1961. The photograph is from the Rhodes/Klumpe Reds Hall of Fame Collection.
