โš“ Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy!

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the purchase and outfitting of two armed vessels; laying the foundation for what would become the United States Navy.

For more than 250 years, generations of sailors have served at sea, beneath it, and in the air, carrying on a proud tradition of service.

Today, we celebrate all who have worn the uniform; past and present.

โš“ Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy!

Have a Navy veteran or sailor in your life? Give them a shoutout!

๐Ÿงญ Columbus Day

Today marks Columbus Day, commemorating Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492; a voyage that became a pivotal moment in world history and forever changed the course of the Americas.

History is rarely simple, and the events that followed European arrival brought enormous and lasting change for the Indigenous peoples already living here.

Days like today give us an opportunity to look back, learn more, and better understand the many perspectives that make up our shared history.

โš“ Happy Founding Anniversary, U.S. Naval Academy!

On October 10, 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy opened its doors in Annapolis, Maryland, with just 50 midshipmen and seven professors.

More than 180 years later, the Academy continues its mission of preparing future officers to serve in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Today, we recognize the generations of Naval Academy graduates who have gone on to serve our nationโ€”at sea, on land, and in the air.

โš“ Happy anniversary, USNA!

๐Ÿ’™ Help Keep Oregon's Military Stories Alive

The artifacts are fascinating. The exhibits bring history to life. But at the heart of the Oregon Military Museum are the stories of the Oregonians who served.

Your support of the Oregon Military Museum Project helps preserve those stories, care for important pieces of military history, and keep them accessible for generations to come.

Whether you donate, become a member, purchase an Honor Brick, or shop the Museum Store, every bit of support helps.

โš–๏ธ On This Day in American History

On October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first African American justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Long before taking his seat on the nationโ€™s highest court, Marshall had already made history as a civil rights attorney, successfully arguing Brown v. Board of Education before the Supreme Court and challenging racial segregation through the legal system.

Marshall would serve on the Court for 24 years, leaving a lasting mark on American law and history.

A milestone worth remembering.

๐ŸŽก On This Day in Oregon History

Think the Oregon State Fair has always been in Salem? Think again!

On October 1, 1861, the very first Oregon State Fair opened near Oregon City in Clackamas County.

For four days, visitors explored 142 exhibits featuring livestock, farming equipment, fruits, vegetables, homemade goods, and some rather unusual competitions. One of the prizes was even awarded for the best full set of artificial teeth mounted on a gold plate. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

The fair moved to Salem the following year, where it eventually found its permanent home.

From prize-winning produce to gold-plated teeth... Oregon history rarely disappoints. ๐Ÿ˜†
