🚨Starting tomorrow, you have just 4(!) days left to see Atomic Dragons, which Hyperallergic writer Austen Villacis called “a haunting, timely exhibition” that “draws its life force from a collective ability to engage with the many-headed hydra of nuclear politics, including spectacle, remembrance, and survival.”

The galleries are open Wed.–Sat., 1–4 pm

🗓️ This week we are hosting two equally engaging programs—a screening of the documentary “In the Dark of the Valley,” detailing the impact of a nuclear meltdown right in our own backyard, and Art, Science, and the Nuclear Legacy, a day of conversation among some of the nation’s preeminent nuclear policy and public health experts and artists whose work is in Atomic Dragons.

☢️ HOT OFF THE PRESS! ☢️

In today’s L.A. Times, Chloe Shrager writes about how the warning call issued in Atomic Dragons takes on new meaning as the U.S. plunges into war with Iran.

In addition to interviewing SWANS artists, Shrager interviewed nuclear policy expert Jim Walsh, who will also be speaking at our April 4 Art, Science, and the Nuclear Legacy symposium.

Join us April 4—the final day to see Atomic Dragons—for a day of conversation about the nuclear age and its geopolitical legacy, environmental toll, and the burdens carried across generations.

The morning opens with Jim Walsh, nuclear policy expert and senior research associate at MIT’s Security Studies Program, and David Richardson, epidemiologist and associate dean for research at UC Irvine’s School of Population & Public Health—two scholars whose work has shaped international policy on nuclear issues.

After a midday break to view the exhibition, SWANS artists Nancy Buchanan, Judith Dancoff, Hillary Mushkin, Sheila Pinkel, and elin o’Hara slavick discuss the histories behind their work.

Free and open to the public. Lunch served.

Are we afraid of one another? Is fear our gross national product? Can we make the world safe enough so that we can once again dream? These are some of the questions posed in Sheila Pinkel’s “Nuclear Questions,” from 1985 that could just as easily be asked today, underscoring both the urgency and the enduring legacy of nuclear imperialism.

ATOMIC DRAGONS brings together works by the intergenerational collective SWANS (Slow War Against the Nuclear State) that reckon with the fallout of the atomic era and place historical narratives alongside contemporary discourse, demonstrating that these concerns are not just relics of a bygone Cold War era but that they have a long-lasting impact that continues to reverberate throughout our world.

SWANS includes: Fiona Amundsen, Nancy Buchanan, Judith Dancoff, Hillary Mushkin, Sheila Pinkel, elin o’Hara slavick, and Lucy HG Solomon of Cesar & Lois, her collaboration with Cesar Baio

Opening reception, Feb. 7, 5–7 pm, free and open to the public

7C community preview, Feb. 4, 4–6 pm

In August 1945, the U.S. introduced nuclear warfare to the world at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The explosions incinerated the cities, and radioactive fallout rose into the atmosphere, traveling far beyond the sites of impact. In the decades since, the effects of those detonations and nuclear weapons testing continue to reverberate in our geopolitical climate, contaminated environments, and the long-term burdens carried by bodies and communities across generations—this legacy is the focus of Atomic Dragons.

Rooted in feminist art lineages, decolonial practice, and anti-nuclear environmental activism, Atomic Dragons connects the personal and the political, linking the Cold War and the start of the atomic era to present-day questions of waste, contamination, transgenerational nuclear justice, and the global expansion of nuclear weapons and power plants.

The Godsill Burns Apprenticeship provides Pitzer students opportunities for paid internships with arts organizations in the Los Angeles region. Awarded competitively, the 10-week apprenticeship program offers mentoring, skills development, and experience in non-profit art careers. Open to all enrolled Pitzer students, with priority consideration for first-generation college students with financial need.

Come visit us for a closer look at Carmen Argote’s new site-specific installation “gajes del oficio”.

By weaving together personal and historical narratives, Argote invites viewers to reconsider our relationships with consumption, desire, and sustainability. Exploring how we dress, interact with material goods, and utilize natural resources, Argote examines cycles of consumption and nourishment, revealing the hidden labor embedded in everyday materials.
