The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology invites qualified researchers and specialists to participate in a short‑term, project‑based initiative focused on the identification and research potential of fossil plant collections housed at the museum.

The Alf Museum houses over 170,000 fossil specimens, many collected with the involvement of high school students from The Webb Schools, and representing key intervals from the last 100 million years of life in western North America. While the museum’s vertebrate collections are well studied, associated fossil plant collections remain largely unidentified and underutilized.

This is a paid, short-term science residency at the Alf Museum. Visiting specialists will contribute to specimen identification, documentation, and recommendations for future research. Engagements are structured around defined deliverables and timelines, not ongoing duties.

Please visit us online for more information on the project and on how to apply. https://www.alfmuseum.org/plantfossilproject2026/

Science class can a look a little different when there’s a museum on campus! Dr. Balisi’s Honors Paleontology students were learning how to measure fossils by practicing on our Brontothere skulls in the Hall of Life! Some students are also going to be working on surface scanning one of the skulls to create a 3D copy to share with other researchers! Good luck everyone!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our first Student Research Symposium and Open House! Our high school paleontologists did an incredible job sharing their research projects and it was great to see folks come by to support them! A special shoutout to Dr. Andy Farke and Dr. Mairin Balisi who lead the Advanced Studies in Paleontology program and mentor our wonderful students. Keep an eye out for updates on their research!

If you come by the museum the next few days you might notice someone is missing! Dinosaur Joe, our juvenile Parasaurolophus fossil, has been taken off display for a days to be laser scanned by our students and Dr. Balisi and turned into a 3D model for research and education. We’ll share updates on the process and when the baby dinosaur returns to the Hall of Life! Good luck students!

Dinosaur Joe was collected in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument under permit from the US Bureau of Land Management.
