Congratulations to Main Street Gallery artist Jeffrey Knonsnoble, whose work is being featured in a major retrospective at the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida, through March 21, 2027.

Many folk artists and folk art lovers are drawn to birds, especially owls. Who-who-who do you love? Them!
Owls are fascinating and beautiful creatures, and Main Street Gallery has these two attractive owl folk art works currently available:

Maybe we love owls because they are, well, lovers who don’t migrate in cold weather but (here in North Georgia) stick around for courtship.
Charles Seabrook, who writes the Wild Georgia column for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, notes that the great horned owl and the barred owl are “two of Georgia’s bird species that begin nesting in winter. Although they may hoot year-round, their calls become more vocal and vociferous in late autumn — as if announcing that winter is drawing near.
“For the big owls, winter is the time of love and courtship,” Seabrook continues. “Their hoots may attract mates, reinforce the bonds between pairs and mark individual territories as they prepare for their breeding seasons. (Georgia’s other big owl, the barn owl, does not hoot.)
“. . . Beginning about mid-December for the great horned owl and mid-January for the barred owl, the birds will get down to baby-rearing.”

R.A. Miller, the North Georgia folk artist who lived in the Rabbittown community on the edge of Gainesville, used to refer to his hillside of art as “junk."
To be clear, Miller wasn't disparaging his own work, but he was a humble man who didn't view what he created as being in the same league as, say, art you would find in a museum. And some of the pieces, in the grand folk art tradition, were indeed crafted out of junk (washed up roofing tin, old store signs, dumpster-rescued lumber) that Miller recycled into art.
Actually, Miller knew people loved his "junk" -- whirligigs that you could admire on his hill even just driving by, paintings on masonite and painted animal and human figures cut out of that rusty tin.
He charged a few bucks per piece, in line with the idea that his high-volume creating wasn't real art, and those dollar bills added up and supported him in his later years.
The gentle man was clearly happy with his lot in life (except for his diminishing eyesight), and recognized and appreciated his regular customers even if he didn't know their names in most cases. He kept making “junk, with bad vision and all, until his days were done.
If he could see things today from his heavenly perch (and maybe he can!), he'd be shocked that his "junk" is more popular than ever (fetching prices with extra zeroes at the end), and considered essential to any folk art collection with a southern accent.
Among the many collectors who covet their "Millers" is our recent customer Harriet, who has been acquiring R.A.'s work for years. She recently scored this smiling red devil cutout at Main Street Gallery.
We were smiling, too. It’s a goodie — “junk” that many good folks rather love!

Carol Roll's small figural sculptures usually exude a large amount of sweetness. So, it was fun when these two sassy troublemakers arrived ahead of Halloween at Main Street Gallery. Meet the fittingly titled "Yuck” (left) and “Miss Ick" (right).
Now, that’s the Halloween spirit!

"Carol's paper mache figures are all originals and are hand-built without the use of molds. In her teens, she developed a passion for antiques and collectibles and has been collecting them and inspired by them since then. Each of her three-dimensional figures is embellished with odds and ends — thimbles, wooden spools, paper parasols, vintage glitter, bits and pieces of old papers and magazines — from her treasure chest collection.
“For Carol, there’s comfort in old things. She loves faded colors. She loves anything that speaks of innocence, nostalgia and impish memories. Although her figures look at first like toys, they are fragile pieces of folk art.”

We’re pleased to have two Richard Burnside paintings now available at Main Street Gallery.
Before Richard died in late 2020, we displayed a steady stream of the South Carolina artist’s imaginative work here at our downtown Clayton storefront. Now, they are hard to come by.
So, for the collector who always wanted a painting by Richard, here are a couple of outstanding examples: “White Wolf” (24” x 48”) and “Yellow Cat” (24” x 24”).
Through not as well known as folk art contemporaries such as Mose Tolliver and Purvis Young, Richard had a distinct painting style and subject matter. Employing contrasting bold colors in enamel paints, he portrayed countless African kings and queens as well as dogs, cats, snakes, insects and many other spirit animals. His pieces always resonate with a quiet power and a sense of mystery.
Honestly, we do not expect these to stick around long!

We recently added this major group of Eric Legge's paintings and sculptures to Main Street Gallery's available art, and it was so invigorating to visit with this self-taught artist with his strong singular vision who we've represented for years and years!
Forever young, Eric always is pushing his work forward in exciting ways even while simultaneously reworking motifs that go back to the beginning of his prolific career in the late 1990s.
In recent years, he has delved deeper into carving wood sculpture, enhanced by an array of found objects that he inventively repurposes. Eric's carving is unquestionably a tribute to his late father Joe Legge, a Vietnam veteran who returned home with three Purple Hearts and became a self-taught wood carver and sculptor.
In the book “When the Spirit Speaks: Self-Taught Art of the South,” Eric told author Margaret Day Allen that he hopes that his art gives viewers “a sense of peace and happiness and joy – which I think is good medicine.”
And it is!

After the hot, hot, hot (did we mention 🔥?) summer in North Georgia, we at Main Street Gallery are so excited about the arrival of fall, considered by many to be the best time of year to visit loverly Clayton.
Fall brings autumn leaves and other wonderful aspects into the picture here, including apple harvest season.
You may be thinking, "That's nice, but what's the big deal about that?" Clearly you've not seen the monumental apple monument in downtown Cornelia, about 40 miles south Clayton down US-23.
Here, we're sharing an available painting of the big apple, formally known as the "Home of the Big Red Apple" monument, by Main Street Gallery artist Amy Payne, whose specialty is Northeast Georgia landscape paintings (see more of them by clicking the link in Comments).
Respect is due -- the 5,200-pound steel and apple monument turned 100 just this year. It was unveiled atop its 8-foot pedestal on June 4, 1926, and remains in the exact same spot though, in truth, Cornelia and Habersham County have long since fallen from the ranks of the nation’s leading apple-producing areas.
The town of Ellijay (roughly 80 miles southwest of Clayton) now lays claim as Georgia's apple capital, but you can still pick and enjoy apples at Hillside Orchard Farms in Lakemont, about a dozen minutes south of Clayton (also down US-23).
Nevertheless, the apple monument continues its century-long reign in Cornelia -- and in Amy Payne's painting!
