Our longtime Alabama folk artist friend James “Buddy” Snipes was celebrated at an event last weekend at Standard Deluxe, a printmaking shop/music venue in Waverly, Alabama.
Buddy is now in a senior facility in North Alabama and (as we understand it) probably not able to make art anymore. But we’re thankful that family and others are seeing to his care.
We paused for a moment yesterday here at Main Street Gallery to enjoy these Buddy works on our lower level (we have bigger pieces exhibited elsewhere in the gallery, too). They bring back so many memories of visiting this charming and bright maker, a storyteller in paint.
The Standard Deluxe gathering was titled “Something from Nothing: The Visual Art of James ‘Buddy’ Snipes,” no doubt a nod to how Buddy recycled found materials in such creative ways in all of his art.
We’ll add that Buddy is really “something,” a true real deal folk artist, and we hope that he know how appreciated he and his art are.

Adam Stimpert, a folk art collector who wisely peruses our Main Street Gallery website regularly, secured a real score last weekend: a consigned Mose Tolliver "Tree of Life" painting.
It's the first painting by the great Montgomery, AL, folk artist in Adam's collection, and it's an excellent example of "MoseT's" work.
The "Tree of Life" is a universal archetype found across global folk art, symbolizing creation, the interconnectedness of all living things and the cycle of nature.
We don't know what the Tree of Life meant specifically to Mose, who died in 2006, but it was a recurring, colorful motif throughout his career. Mose painted with house paint, comfortably mixing assorted colors on reclaimed wood boards, wet on wet, in his characteristic loose, flattened style.
Every serious Southern folk art collection needs a MoseT, and we're seriously happy to have helped Adam find his!

We’ve got Cornbreads fresh out of the oven (er, his studio)! Since Cornbread is so popular on our menu (um, in our gallery), we thought you’d appreciate a heads-up.
John “Cornbread” Anderson seems to follow a secret recipe, and whatever he stirs up doesn’t last long here at Main Street Luncheonette (oops, Gallery)!
Sorry for the over-baked Corniness, but we’re just happy to have these nice paintings since customers frequently inquire when we’ll have more Cornbreads available.
For a short time at least, the answer is “Now!”

We're pleased to show you new work here by our longtime artist Amy Lansburg!
One of the things that has most impressed us while representing Amy over many years at Main Street Gallery is how her evocative figurative work is always moving forward -- incorporating new ideas, found materials, compositions and colors -- while appearing consistently, unmistakably hers. Amy's new art is always truly NEW.
We hope you can come see it, but, if you're not near, we'll also have more of these piece for your viewing pleasure and consideration on Amy's artist page on our website (linked below in Comments) soon!

Do you have a “perfect spot” for a new piece of art?
Steve Brandon and his wife thought they did when they visited Main Street Gallery and became enamored of this painting by folk artist Ed McGrath.
But the Brandons, who had previously purchased a Theresa Disney painting from the gallery that completed their living room, wanted to see the McGrath work in that perfect spot just in case. They took it home on approval and, just as they hoped, it worked, well, perfectly.
If you have a perfect spot for new art, measure the space and either visit us in downtown Clayton or check out the artist pages on our website (or both!). With three stories filled with pleasing art, we’re confident we have multiple choices that fit your perfect spot, too!

Sometimes a Main Street Gallery customer will leave the gallery thinking about a particular work of art. Days will pass, then weeks, and, somewhere along the line, the customer will decide, “I REALLY, want that — I wonder if they still have it…”
Well, we still had this fun Woodie Long painting of a clown with its festive frame that Nelson Northcutt’s wife wanted. And being a thoughtful husband with a swell sense of timing, he drove up from Atlanta to get it!
We’re happy that the Mrs. Is happy. And, by the way, happy Mother’s Day to all our many favorite Moms out there!

In Lonnie and Twyla Money's carved wood "Cat and Mouse" sculpture, the cat, as felines are wont to do, has happily nabbed the mouse. And then, lo and behold, customer Liz Amos, as savvy folk art collectors are wont to do, has happily caught both the cat AND the mouse!
Liz asked us to put the Moneys' clever creation on hold soon after we posted it on our website.
Let us know if you see something you like on our site (mainstreetgallery.net), and we’ll help you nab a good folk art catch, too!

It's one of mankind's (and womankind's) most pressing questions: Dogs or cats?
Oh, why must we choose! Many animal lovers love them both equally, and who are we to celebrate one over the other?
To keep the pet factions happy, we have quite a variety of dog AND cat folk art available at Main Street Gallery to make dog lovers howl or cat fanatics purr with pleasure.
These works are by (top row, from left) Lonnie and Twyla Money, James Buddy Snipes, (bottom row, from left) Pippa Seacrist (you can commission a face jug of your own canine!), Wendy Slaton, Carolyn Simmons, Barry Gregg, Carol Roll and Wendy Slaton again. (Side note: Gotta love that Buddy Snipes title: "Undertaker Man and "Chawala" Dog!"
If you love pets like we do, you're barking up the right tree at Main Street Gallery!
