Ucross Foundation Ucross is a world-class artist residency program on a historic 20,000-acre ranch in northern Wyoming. Our participants come from all over the world.

Ucross Foundation, a 501(c)3 public nonprofit organization, has been welcoming artists since 1983. For 40 years, Ucross has been giving space and time to artists across disciplines, including visual and interdisciplinary artists, writers, composers, and performing artists. In our complex of private studios and shared residences, visiting artists build a small, intense community hard at work in the midst of 20,000 acres of Wyoming ranchland. Ucross's home is a working ranch set at the confluence of three creeks, and our purpose is to bring deeply committed artists into the heart of this unparalleled landscape. We believe that being a good steward of the land closely resembles being a good artist, and vice versa. Both require dedication, imagination, and the best possible use of the resources at hand. In addition to fostering the work of individual artists, Ucross is a meeting and working place for groups, a multi-disciplinary laboratory for creative thinking. The Ucross Art Gallery, a cultural landmark of northern Wyoming, features artwork by acclaimed former artists-in-residence. We invite the public to visit, free of charge, and then enjoy espresso and freshly baked pastries at the onsite Ucross Café. We also help sponsor and host educational programs, conferences, and special events. Our reach is as close as our nearest neighbors and as distant as almost any spot on earth. Ucross is home to the creative spirit.

With fall underway, we invite you to recreate this cozy recipe from Ucross Chef Jackie Vitale.

Chef Jackie’s Spiced Pumpkin and Tomato Soup

Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoon olive oil
• Half an onion, roughly chopped
• 1 carrot, roughly chopped
• 1 teaspoon each salt, cayenne, cinnamon, thyme, cumin
• 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
• 2 delicata squash or pumpkin of your choosing, chopped into 1-inch cubes
• 2 tablespoons salt
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup coconut milk

Heat your pot over medium heat. Add olive oil, onion, and carrot, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes, until onions begin to soften. Add salt and spices, and stir. Add crushed tomatoes, squash, salt, and water, and bring to a boil. Maintain a simmer, and cook until the squash is very soft.* Add coconut milk, and blend. An immersion blender works, but if you want a super smooth and silky soup, use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix. Give it a final taste to see if it needs anything — more salt, a splash of maple syrup, more cayenne?

If you like, serve with a dollop of yogurt and fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, and mint.

*If you prefer, roast the squash ahead of time. Slice in half, scoop out the seeds, slather in olive oil and salt, and roast, cut-side-down, in an oven heated to 425 °F for about 40 minutes or until squash is very soft.

Bon Appétit!

We are thrilled to announce that Ucross Fellow Tracy Stuckey is the latest featured artist in the Big Red Showcase at the Ucross Art Gallery.

Tracy, who recently joined us to paint live during the Ucross Gala, has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States in both solo and group exhibitions and has won numerous grants and awards. To a contemporary Western painter like Tracy, the American West is more than a location. It is a label, persona, and most importantly, a cultural identity.

See Tracy’s work now through February 20, 2027, in the Big Red Barn.

We would like to take a moment to congratulate Ucross Fellow Steven J. Yazzie (Diné / Pueblo of Laguna) for curating the group exhibition “Lines of Continuance” at Denver International Airport.

Featuring 11 Indigenous artists, “Lines of Continuance” creates moments of encounter as travelers pass through the Denver Airport that interrupt neutrality and remind viewers that movement has always been central to Indigenous life, long before contemporary infrastructures of travel existed. Featured artists include:

•Crisosto Apache (Mescalero, Chiricahua Apache, & Diné)
•JayCee Beyale (Diné)
•Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe)
•Chelsea Kaiah (White Mountain Apache, White River Ute)
•Skye Little Cloud (Yankton, Sāmoan, Kickapú)
•Kristina Maldonado Bad Hand (Sicangu Lakota and Cherokee)
•Eugene Rooks (Oglala Lakĥota)
•Danielle SeeWalker (Hunkpapa Lakota citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe)
•Sid Whiting (Sicangu Lakota)
•Steven J. Yazzie (Diné / Pueblo of Laguna)

This exhibition is on view now through January 18, 2027, so if you find yourself traveling through DIA, stop in Ansbacher Hall on the A-Bridge to see this special collection of work.

Join Ucross alumna Caroline Davis for her performance on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m., at Kinnison Hall in Sheridan College as part of her Fallows Solo Tour.

Caroline is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist, composer, and activist, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears, minds, and hearts. “Fallows,” composed while Caroline was in residency at Ucross, blends alto saxophone, electronics, and field recordings captured onsite.
