Another great class at the Southlake Art League in Clermont. Many of my students are new to watercolor but you wouldn't believe it by looking at their work.
We talked about not every great artist makes a great teacher. Being self-taught gives me the patience and understanding required to nurture people and show them step by step how to manage the medium we are working in.
If you've ever wanted to give painting a try, but felt intimidated, any one of my students will tell you that this won't happen in my class.
Its cheaper than therapy and gives your brain a good workout.

Maria Barry says, "Interestingly enough, we had painted a sunflower and a poppy on rice paper a couple of weeks ago. Many of my students were not familiar with this flower as it doesn't grow in Florida. Ignorantly I had assumed that everyone knew what a poppy looked like, so today we did a "study" of the poppy, giving the sole flower the importance is deserves. I think these students did an amazing job. Next challenge on the way....."

If you'd like to join us, class is each Tuesday at 11AM. Please reach out to instructor Maria Barry at [email protected].

This afternoon in Kid's Art we learned several new drawing and watercolor
techniques. We put them all together and drew and painted an American flag. We had a very small class due to graduations and things but we had fun.

Instructor Maria Barry , "today I thought we'd switch things up a bit and do something different. There are so many substrates you can paint watercolors on and each gives a different effect.
Painting on rice paper, once you've crinkled it, gives you quite a terrain. As usual, everyone was up for the challenge, and as usual, they didn't disappoint. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it, with a little encouragement from the group."

Our project yesterday started with oversized canvases. We revisitied patterns and lines, and our students were learning that art is a layering process. They weren't just "drawing a flower"—they were analyzing structure, choosing their colors and then mixing their paints to get the color of their choice. They were expressing themselves with their own unique patterns and design. And as creative as our students are - their arrangements were beautiful.

Maria Barry, "Today's watercolor class was a little challenging in that as you got more into the painting, it started to grow.
Sometimes you have to delve deeper into the painting before you see results - giving up is not an option. This group of artists don't give up - they're incredible and I look forward to painting with them every week. They are an inspiration."

This class meets every Tuesday at 11AM. For more information please contact instructor Maria Barry at [email protected].

In Kid's Art (8 - 13 year olds)Tuesday the students had a warm up drawing lesson - drawing robots. They are always so creative with the items they add to their robots. They also did a great job of painting 2 different species of cactus in watercolor & really seemed to enjoy painting them. Before the painting we discussed how need to determine where the light source is coming from….the lightest side of the image where the light glows will be a lighter shade & the other side a darker color. We were so busy we didn't get many pictures....

Maria Barry, "In this week's watercolor class we painted a peacock. One way we can paint attitude and vibrancy, is through color. We applied some of the techniques from our previous class where I demonstrated some of the effects we can achieve by regulating the amount of water versus paint.
Everyone did great again, and without fail, they all looked different, with their own personality." For more I information about this class, please contact instructor Maria Barry at [email protected].
