Clermont Historical Society

Clermont Historical Society Preserving Clermont’s past to inspire its future. Today, our town is home to just over 1,100 lucky residents who consider our community family.

We’re a nonprofit dedicated to keeping our small town’s history alive through stories, artifacts, and community events. Formerly known as Dip, Georgia, the name of our idyllic all-American small town was changed to Clermont in 1905, reflecting the "clear mountain" view of Wauka Mountain. In 1913, the Georgia General Assembly formally incorporated the Town of Clermont, which was home to important l

andmarks such as the Griffin Brothers General Store and Cotton House, as well as a boarding school--quite a rich feature for the time. Spanning a 3 mile swath of rural land in north Hall County, Clermont was at one point a bustling hub of activity as a stop along the agricultural railway. We take great pride in our historic buildings, events organized by the Town, Clermont Historical Society, and dedicated local volunteers, and--in the heart of our town--our residential historic district. With over a century of history to explore and preserve, we are dedicated to the cause in hopes that future generations will better understand where we came from, what makes us who we are, and the incomparable value of life in a classic small town. Visit our town's website to stay in the know about what's happening in our small corner of heaven!

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the veterans from Clermont and the surrounding community who served our country and helped protect the freedoms we enjoy today and have for 250 years.

For generations, folks from our small town answered the call to serve - from World War I and World War II to Korea, Vietnam, and more recent conflicts. Many of those stories are part of Clermont’s history and live on through local families, photographs, churches, cemeteries, and memories passed down through generations.

As our town continues working to preserve local history, we are proud to see the new Veterans Memorial Park becoming a place where our community can honor and remember those who served. It stands as a reminder that even in a small town like Clermont, there are countless stories of sacrifice, courage, and service. Join us on June 6th for the ribbon cutting (see events on our homepage)!

If your family has photographs, military records, or stories connected to veterans from the Clermont area, we encourage you to help us preserve that history for future generations. Comment below or message us to share your hometown veteran with us as we continue learning, remembering, and sharing the stories of our hometown heroes.

Lastly, mark your calendars for next year and have your favorite veteran honored by Town of Clermont: https://www.clermontga.com/honoring-our-heros

Last weekend we had an incredible event celebrating Northeast Georgia history!

The recent Georgia History Exchange meeting, hosted by the Longstreet Society at the historic Piedmont Hotel, brought together historians, museums, archives, and preservation groups to share ideas and highlight important work happening here in our local communities.

It was exciting to see Habersham History represented through the Digitize Habersham project and the upcoming Big Red Apple documentary ahead of the monument’s 100th anniversary celebration this June. 🍎 Check the trailer out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF-J5zX291Q / https://habershamnews.com/2026/05/15/habersham-history-hightlights-digitize-habersham-big-red-apple-documentary-at-georgia-history-exchange-meeting/

Projects like these help preserve the stories, people, and places that shaped Northeast Georgia for future generations to come.

A huge thank you to everyone involved and all those working every day to keep local history alive.

Got a story to share? Message us or email us — we’d love to help highlight your local story!
