Have you ever visited Bumpas Cemetery in Lawrence County?

This historic cemetery has Stibling roots! One of T.S. Stribling's relatives donated the land and was a generous supporters of the community.

Partnering with a local Cemetery Board in Lawrenceburg TN, students from Columbia State Community College will be the architects of an event to help the community. The students will meditate and make real-world connections by answering the question, “Does it pay to study the humanities?” This event must focus on the education of local youth, incorporate the mission of the cemetery board and collaborate with the community. This project will require the inclusion of primary source documents/objects, the use of the college’s research resources through the library, and regular correspondence with the professor.

Students would be working with the Lawrence County Cemetery Board on one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. The land was originally donated by a member of author T.S. Stribling's family and has graves reaching as far back as the Civil War. The board is interested in not only preserving this local historical landmark but also looking ahead to the future and the citizens of Lawrenceburg. Currently, the board is looking to raise funds to purchase a columbarium. This is a display vault in a wall or structure specifically designed to hold cremation urns. It's a stately choice for a final disposition available at many cemeteries, churches, and funeral homes. This would be the first of its kind in the Lawrence County area.

The Students will organize, host, and design the event, “Walking Tales” – Bringing Historic Stories To Life on Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 4-7pm at the historic Cemetery, As patrons stroll through the cemetery, they will meet interpreters, many in period dress giving voice to the renowned, legendary and infamous personalities laid to rest there. There will also be Food Trucks from local vendors and Live Music!
