Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West The Cody Fi****ms Museum in Cody, Wyoming is one of five museums at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West—founded in 1991 and completely redesigned in 2019.

The museum houses more than 10,000 artifacts that span hundreds of years. The Cody Fi****ms page is a way to stay in touch with the museum before or after a trip. It's a great place to ask questions, share your personal stories, and learn about guns - even if you can't make the trip to Cody (though we hope you will).

With over 4,200 fi****ms on display, it's hard to pick a favorite! Here are five that we think are worth noting, which guns made your top five?
1. John "Liver-Eating" Johnston's Hawken rifle, carried by the mountain man himself.
2. Samuel Colt's personal cased pair of Model 1851 Navy revolvers.
3. Girardoni air rifle of the same design and period as the air rifle famously carried on the Lewis & Clark expedition.
4. Holland & Holland Punt gun, over eight feet long!
5. The very first Wi******er M1 Carbine off the production line.

We're often asked about the steps we take to preserve our artifacts. In both storing and displaying our artifacts, we take careful measures to protect our objects from temperature, humidity, contact, and light exposure. To control temperature and humidity, our artifacts are kept in sealed environments that prevent rapid changes in temperature as well as filter out humidity that exceeds our climate control. Each object is also rested on an artifact-safe material that protects against, scratches, friction, or any other form of contact. Lastly, we rotate objects between display and storage to prevent fading due to long-term exposure to light.

This Wi******er Model 1894 was built in 1905 with a barrel threaded for a silencer. Prior to the introduction of the National Fi****ms Act in 1934, a silencer, now more commonly called a suppressor, could be purchased over the counter like any other firearm accessory.

There are many different ways to explore the CFM! Each gallery has its own color to clearly distinguish the focus and intersection of different themes. Additionally, each gallery also has its own logo to represent the main topic it covers. However, if you've looked closely, you may have noticed the secret tour! Hidden throughout the galleries are Spotify codes that lead to songs pertaining to the associated artifacts. How many have you noticed so far?

This Wi******er Model 1887 was dispatched to the American Express Company in 1895. Originally founded as a stagecoach and express mail service, American Express acquired this shotgun for use by its security personnel, which inspired the term "riding shotgun".

We are excited to announce that "Arms of the Revolution" will debut on April 17, 2026, at the Cody Fi****ms Museum. This signature exhibition commemorates America's 250th anniversary by immersing visitors in the history of our nation’s founding. The exhibition features authentic fi****ms and projectiles used on Revolutionary battlefields, showcasing items from our museum's collection as well as loans from Fort Ticonderoga and Minute Man National Historical Park. Visitors will gain insights into the weaponry employed by both Patriot and Loyalist forces. With dramatic displays, including paired muskets, an exploded-view firearm, and advanced forensic analysis, the exhibition highlights the pivotal role that arms played in America’s quest for independence.

April Fools! This may look like a flintlock pistol, but it's actually a powder tester. Before the advent of more modern manufacturing, black powder would often have consistency issues which created the need for it to be tested before being issued to troops. Powder testers, such as this one made by Brander & Potts of London, would be loaded with a small amount of black powder and then "fired" to test how well it ignited.
