Happy International Women’s Day! Today we’re celebrating the bold, brilliant, and boundary-breaking women of Coffeyville whose stories remind us how far courage and creativity can take you!
Mildred “Burke” Bliss – A trailblazer in women’s professional wrestling, becoming a three-time women’s world champion at a time when the sport was dominated by men. She helped legitimize women’s wrestling across the country and paved the way for generations of female athletes.
Cynthia Sikes Yorkin - Born in Coffeyville, she become an accomplished actress and producer. From earning the title of Miss Kansas to memorable roles on shows like St. Elsewhere and producing critically acclaimed films like Blade Runner 2049, she’s shown us what passion and perseverance look like in the spotlight and behind the scenes.
Micky “Mickey” Axton - A true aviation pioneer. As one of the first women trained as a Women Airforce Service Pilot and the first woman to fly a Boeing B-29, she soared past barriers in a time when women in the cockpit were rare.
Eva Jessye - A groundbreaking choral conductor and educator, born in Coffeyville and internationally recognized for her work during the Harlem Renaissance. She directed her own choir, collaborated on historic Broadway and opera productions, and paved the way for generations of Black musicians and conductors.
W. Ann Reynolds - rose to national prominence in higher education leadership, becoming the only woman to have led two of the largest university systems in the country. Her legacy is one of opportunity, access, and academic excellence.
These women represent just a glimpse of the strength, creativity, and leadership that Coffeyville women have shared with the world. Today we celebrate their legacies, and we look forward with excitement to the women in our community who are already dreaming big, leading boldly, and shaping what comes next.
