Looking back to last year's ghostly release from the Royal Canadian Mint! 👻🪙

The "Lady in White" commemorative silver coin depicts Mathilde Robin, who legend says leapt into Montmorency Falls in 1759 after her fiancé died in the Battle of Beauport. Sightings of her ghostly figure are still reported at the falls to this day.

In An Efficient Engineer, Part 3, we dive into the sensational 1891 discovery of buried gold beneath the former Oakland home of late San Francisco Mint melter and refiner John M. Eckfeldt!

When two house movers unearthed a hidden box of gold coins or ingots, press reports quickly linked the hoard to Eckfeldt—even dragging up past rumors of a 1850s mint gold shortfall. Despite defense from friends and glaring factual inaccuracies in the story, the rumors led the Treasury Department to dig up his former property looking for remaining treasure in 1893.

In An Efficient Engineer, Part 2, we explore the remarkable yet tragic life of machinist John M. Eckfeldt.

After bringing Philadelphia Mint expertise to San Francisco in 1852, Eckfeldt contributed his expertise to the Carson City Mint before he returned to the San Francisco Mint. Though he oversaw the construction and outfitting of the new San Francisco Mint, the overwhelming pressures of his work led to a tragic end in October 1874—just weeks before the new facility opened using machinery he built.

The ANA Wants You! A District Representative Recruitment Call 🪙

The volunteer District Representative program is a key conduit between the ANA, coin clubs, coin show attendees, and collectors not familiar with the ANA. They are goodwill ambassadors letting collectors know the great work the ANA does in its role of being the numismatic educational and growth advocate for our hobby.

We are adding volunteer District Representatives (DRs), throughout the country to work with coin clubs and to attend and man ANA tables at coin shows. Your territory would encompass a radius of one to two hours from where you live. The time commitment is not great, we ask you to attend just two club meetings and two shows a year although you are welcome to attend more.

If you have an interest, you can discuss the DR duties and why you would be interested in becoming a DR with Ken Sammut, ANA's volunteer outreach coordinator. He can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 610-675-6186. With several hundred active DRs strategically placed around the country, you can help both the ANA and our beloved hobby grow.
