Blackistone Lighthouse - St. Clement's Island

Blackistone Lighthouse - St. Clement's Island Visit the site of Maryland’s birthplace. In 1634, 140 English settlers landed here to establish America’s fourth British colony. Hike the 40-acre island.

The Potomac River island features a cross commemorating the founding as well as the reconstructed Blackistone Lighthouse. Pier and docking facilities, sandy beach, picnic area. Mainland museum highlights island history. Seasonal water taxi and lighthouse tours available via the museum.

It was 67 years ago today that the original lighthouse caught fire and was ultimately destroyed.

A cold boat ride, but worth the trip. Since the solar panel batteries for the light for the cross are in the process of being replaced, Tom and I had to dig into our light painting skills.... The lighthouse and cross are both lit by flashlight using a long exposure.
