On display Howard County Center of African American Culture. An original bust of the great who:

Described literacy as both “the pathway from slavery to freedom” and a painful awakening because it made him fully aware of his condition.

Sat for over 160 portraits and photographs — more than many presidents of the era.

He changed his last name after escaping

Douglass was born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.

After reaching safety, he adopted “Douglass” from a character in Sir Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. The new name helped conceal his identity from slave catchers.

At age 16, Douglass was sent to Edward Covey, a notorious “slave breaker” known for brutal beatings.

After enduring repeated abuse, Douglass fought back during one attack and resisted for nearly two hours. Covey never beat him again.

Douglass later wrote that this moment “rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom” within him and psychologically transformed him from enslaved person to future rebel.

In 1872, the Equal Rights Party nominated Douglass for Vice President alongside women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull.

In 1895, Douglass spent the day speaking at a meeting of the National Council of Women in Washington, D.C.

He returned home energetic and discussing the event with his wife when he suddenly collapsed from a heart attack.

Even on the final day of his life, he was still actively advocating for civil rights and equality.
