John J. Tooley, formerly of Central City, has purchased the Meridian café from Mrs. Mary Hendron, taking possession today. Mr. Tooley is an experienced restaurant man, having been in the business in Central City for eight years prior to selling out several months ago.

County Surveyor, L.F. Gottschalk, has made his formal filing at the office of County Clerk Bender as a candidate for the democratic nomination for surveyor. It is not considered likely that he will have any opposition.

The practice of riding bicycles on the side-walks in the city has become so prevalent that Chief of Police Jack Lehman today declared it must be stopped, except in instances in which the riders comply in full with the terms of the city ordinance.

Between 500 and 1,000 people attending the picnic at Welch’s grove north of Columbus yesterday afternoon held under the auspices of Shell Valley local of the Farmers’ union were forced to hit the trail for home in a hurry, leaving the program of out-door sports unfinished when the storm broke shortly after 4:30.

Excavation for the construction of the new Federated church parsonage was begun today. The site is just west of the church in Fifteenth street. The building will be a two-story frame, with interior oak finish throughout.

‘Member how Phil Hockenberger pulled his famous disappearing act one evening recently when he stepped on the cover of one of the downtown manholes that had not been properly replaced? Phil filed a claim with the city dads last night for the price of a new pair of trousers--$11.50—to take the place of the pair he had ruined in his inadvertent descent to the lower regions.

Barney Micek will reopen his soft drink parlor in the near future, providing the city council will grant him a permit. Mr. Micek exhibited to the dads a letter from his Omaha attorneys saying that the United States district attorney had withdrawn all objections to his operating such a place and had given consent that the business, which was closed up following the liquor raids of several months ago, be re-opened.

Despite a remonstrance signed by 153 business men and other citizens, the council last evening granted the application of the Midland Refining company for a permit to erect a filling station on the Fulmer lot at the northeast corner of the intersection of Thirteenth street and Twenty-eighth avenue.
