Did You Know?

Between 1919 and 1922, Columbus resident Max Terhune became known as the “Hoosier Mimic” and gained notoriety in the entertainment industry as an imitator, ventriloquist, and emcee. He frequently gave shows at the Crump Theatre & American Theatre in Columbus. In the early days of his career, Terhune was often introduced on the radio as “The man who fools the barnyard animals and makes a canary ashamed of its song.” He entertained on the radio by imitating not only birds and animals, but also musical instruments, machines, and trains. Terhune rose to fame making nearly 70 films with western stars of the 1930s and 40s, including a 1944 film, “White Stallion” which also starred former Columbus residents, Ken and Kermit Maynard, movie star cowboys and horsemen. Terhune was born in 1891 in a log cabin in Amity, Johnson County and he died in 1973 at his home in Cottonwood, Arizona.

Did You Know?

In 1974, designer Paul Rand created Columbus Indiana: A Look at Architecture, a chronicle of the city’s architectural history. The book’s cover had a pattern of C’s scattered across the front, which Columbus quickly embraced. More than 40 years later, Columbus residents still consider the design to be a part of their city’s fabric.

Community members joined us today to celebrate the completion of the "3rd Street Dancing Cs" mural by Samuel Crawford.
This vibrant work brings movement, color, and energy to downtown and reflects art's power to transform shared spaces.
