When I was a kid, I used to come into this building for penny candy đ I had no idea that one day Iâd be the one restoring it.
The house was built in 1780. John Thoreau (Henryâs father) ran a shop and lived here until 1850. Later it became the F.H. Trumbull Country Store â and the original sign still hangs inside (see first and last slides!)
When we restored it, we took it down to the studs. We kept the wavy-glass windows and ceiling beams, and put in (new, but old) 15â yellow pine floors and rebuilt the fireplaces from the original chimney bricks. I love that every time someone sits down to dinner here, theyâre part of a really long line of people whoâve gathered in these rooms.
Did anyone else come here for candy back in the day? Tell me below đâ¨
