The Robbins House is a historic 19th-century home that tells the story of free African American families in Concord, Massachusetts, and highlights its regional and national importance.

From 1854 to 2020, sixteen people refused to move. Their courage connects across 162 years — and it comes home to Concord, Massachusetts native, Ellen Garrison, a woman who on May 5, 1866, tested the blinks-old Civil Rights Act of 1866 to see if it really changed anything. At a train station in Baltimore, she learned it hadn’t. The hard way. She fought on.

Today, 160 years ago, on May 5, 1866, Ellen Garrison, together with Mary J. C. Anderson, took a seat in a Baltimore train station waiting room—and was dragged out. Just weeks after the Civil Rights Act became law, her act put its meaning to the test.

Ellen is possibly one of the first persons in American history to test the Civil Rights Act in court. She had written: “I feel as though I ought to strive to maintain my rights — it will be a stand for others.”

This Patriots’ Day: Meet members of the Black Heritage Trail Advisory Team at the Patriots Day Block Party on Main Street on Monday, April 20! 🎉 🇺🇸 Wander through Concord exploring ten temporary signs highlighting the planned Black heritage and view a mock-up of a future trail marker.

This project—led by the Town of Concord, The Robbins House, and partners—brings Black history into the landscape through interpretive markers at key sites across Concord for learning, reflection, and discovery.
