10/29/1861- 🎂 Birth of Andrei Ryabushkin

Andrey Petrovich Ryabushkin encountered far more trials and hardships than joys in his short life. Very modest, gentle and retiring, he was, however, a man of great courage and fortitude.

Though his art was largely misunderstood and his contemporaries only too often received it with undisguised hostility, he continued to work stubbornly, searching for a poetic embodiment of his artistic ideals.

Ryabushkin's artistic tastes began to form early. He was born in the village of Borisoglebskoe (Tambov province) in 1861. His father and brother were well-known as icon-painters, and he started to draw in his early childhood; he had a good ear for music and sang in the local choir as a boy.

10/28/1646 - † William Dobson

English painter. He was described by his contemporary Aubrey as 'the most excellent painter England hath yet bred', and as such he succeeded van Dyck as Court Painter in 1642 and to some of the position of van Dyck, whose assistant he may have been.

It is, however, not certain that he was van Dyck's pupil (an early Self-Portrait is markedly Rembrandtesque), or even that he was appointed Serjeant Painter.

His impasted and robust style is more Italianate than van Dyck's, and may have been formed on a study of the superb Titians and other Venetian pictures in Charles I's collection.

10/26/1764 - † William Hogarth

English painter and engraver. He trained as an engraver in the Rococo tradition, and by 1720 was established in London independently as an engraver on copper of billheads and book illustrations.

In his spare time he studied painting, first at the St Martin's Lane Academy and later under Sir James Thornhill, whose daughter he married in 1729.

By this time he had begun to make a name with small conversation pieces, and about 1730 he set up as a portrait painter.

At about the same time he invented and popularized the use of a sequence of anecdotal pictures 'similar to representations on the stage' to point a moral and satirize social abuses.

10/24/1875 - 🎂 Birth of Konstantin Yuon

Yuon was born in Moscow to the family of a banking clerk of Swiss-Russian origin. His brother Paul Juon was a notable composer.

From 1892 to 1898 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture where Konstantin Savitsky and Konstantin Korovin were among his distinguished teachers. After graduating from the Moscow Art School he took private lessons from Valentin Serov (1898–1900). During several trips to Western Europe, particularly in Paris, he became acquainted with the cityscapes of Camille Pissarro and other Impressionists, but retained his own distinctive style.

In 1900 he opened the first private painting and drawing school in Moscow. Some noted Russian painters received art education in the school (for example, Olga Zhekulina). Later he taught in Leningrad Academy of Arts and the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. His studio in Moscow was widely used by other painters. He designed sets for plays at the Moscow Art Theatre and the Maly Theater, becoming the official designer for this theater from 1945 to 1947. He also contributed sets for operas.

In the Soviet era, Yuon was the director of the Research Institute of the Academy of Arts (1948–1950) and the First Secretary of the Union of Soviet Artists (1956–1958). He won a Stalin Prize (1943), received the Order of Lenin and other orders and medals. He died in Moscow on April 11, 1958.

10/22/1620 - † Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanne was a Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavour to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.

Cezanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism.

The line attributed to both Matisse and Picasso that Cezanne "is the father of us all" cannot be easily dismissed. Cezanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, tone, composition and draughtsmanship.

His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable.

10/21/1620 - † Giovanni Paolo Panini

Giovanni Paolo Pannini (or Panini), Italian painter. He was the first painter to specialize in ruins, treating them as Roman 'vedute' of a special kind.

He was working in Rome by c. 1717, but the earliest surviving dated picture is of 1727 (London, Wellington Museum); in 1729 he was concerned in a Fate given by Cardinal de Polignac in honor of the birth of the Dauphin and this began a long connection with France and the French Academy in Rome. Paintings of the Fate are in the Louvre (1729) and Dublin (1731).

10/20/1620 - 🎂Birth of Aelbert Cuyp

Cuyp is the name of a family of Dutch painters of Dordrecht, of which three members gained distinction.

Aelbert Cuyp is the most famous member of the family and now one of the most celebrated of all landscape painters, although he also painted many other subjects.

He was the son and probably the pupil of Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp. His early works also show the influence of Jan van Goyen.
