Barbara's fascination with portraits began when an art organization that she wanted to support offered a portrait painting workshop. She signed up and that was the beginning of a love for painting faces, expressions, and capturing the uniqueness of an individual. She also discovered that the reaction of an overjoyed client is the greatest reward of all. Barbara said, “Landscapes, flowers, and frui
ts just don’t evoke the same emotions.”
Barbara’s formal art education began at the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS, where she earned a B.F.A. and continued graduate study at the University of Mississippi where she obtained a Master of Art in Education. Upon graduation, she began a teaching career in the Art Department at Northeast Mississippi Community College where she taught drawing, design, painting, and art appreciation. Since then, she has taught private lessons, seminars, and workshops to children, high school students, and adults. Barbara has participated in numerous art shows and exhibits throughout the country. Her work has also been featured in the renowned Mississippi Magazine. After developing an interest in portraiture, she began to educate herself through books, art magazines, the work of other artists, and most importantly, workshops with artists that she admired, Alan Flattmann, Daniel Green, and Michael Shane Neil. Barbara paints in the traditional realistic style and says, “I want to capture the likeness and personality of my subject with an artistic quality that will render it a family treasure for generations to come.”
