Louise Bourgeois

What better way to start Halloween week than sharing our favorite Louise Bourgeois spider sculpture, “Maman”.

Bourgeois’s spider series explored the complicated character of her mother.
The metal spiders are ambivalent creatures. The spider is an image of creativity and industry – like Bourgeois’s mother, the spider is a weaver – and also one of fear and disgust. They are sized to make one feel small against an otherworldly presence, and yet also protected beneath its powerful shelter.

“The friend (the spider – why the spider?) because my best friend was my mother and she was deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat and useful as a spider,” she wrote in Ode à Ma Mère, an illustrated book from 1995.

This week, we celebrate the late Tony DeLap (1927–2019)—one of the most original and inventive figures to emerge from the California art scene of the 1960s. A true pioneer of West Coast abstraction, Minimalism, and Op art, DeLap masterfully blended precision and illusion, often drawing on his lifelong fascination with magic and sleight of hand to challenge our perception of form and space.

DeLap’s meticulously crafted works—whether in aluminum, Plexiglas, wood, or canvas—embody a unique harmony between rigor and mystery. Princess Diavalo exemplifies his elegant command of geometry and subtle optical tension.

We continue to miss Tony dearly and feel privileged to have shared in his creative journey. His wit, vision, and generosity left a lasting mark on all who knew him—and his art continues to inspire wonder and admiration.

Petrit Halilaj

Petrit Halilaj is a former child refugee - turned artist who has been awarded the Nasher Prize for Sculpture.

“The artist Petrit Halilaj still remembers leaving his house at age 12: It was during a brutal chapter of the Kosovo War in 1999, when his family made its way to a refugee camp in Albania after Serbian troops had set his village ablaze. A psychologist at the camp recommended that Halilaj pursue drawing as a creative outlet, and more than two decades later, that has spawned a celebrated international career in sculpture.” Zachary Small.

We love how some artists and can transform darkness into light and delight. It takes a great spirit and character to create such playful work from personal traumatic experiences .

Hope you enjoy this delightful work as much as we do !

Pic of the Week

Inspired by the minimalist work of Agnes Martin and Donald Judd, Pard Morrison has described his work, which he terms “hybrids,” as “an exploration of a hypothetical conversation between Donald Judd and Agnes Martin.” Constructed from box-like aluminum fabrications that are then patinated by repeatedly baking the finish, Morrison’s “hybrids” are graphic sculptural compositions that function visually as paintings. Morrison characterizes his work as “Human Minimalism.” He believes the “fusion of surface and medium is an applicable metaphor for the human condition.” For Morrison, the physical property of the metal boxes suggests human scale, while ethereal surfaces suggest the human spirit.

Admittedly, a touch of Colorado heritage made me gravitate toward this week’s Art in Nature pic of the week. I love the juxtaposition of the bold, colorful, linear grid structures in quiet conversation with nature’s lush surroundings and the Rocky Mountain backdrop in particular. I thank for the introduction to this artist and his profound artworks.

Labor Day weekend is right around the corner and that is usually the signal for the end of summer (except to us lucky SoCal folks that secretly know that means the best summer month is still ahead- ie: September!). Let this post be the inspiration to get our feet wet this weekend and toast to Sumner 2025 ! 🎉

As eloquently shared about this work: “In the early 1980s, David Hockney bought a modest house on Montcalm Avenue in the Hollywood Hills. Sun-drenched and unassuming, it became a private studio, sanctuary, and the backdrop for some of his most intimate works. But it’s the pool — unmistakably Hockney — that turns the property into a living canvas.
He hand-painted the pool floor with his signature blue wave-like squiggles — those joyful, rhythmic marks that had already come to define his California series. Here, though, they weren’t frozen on canvas. They moved with the light. They shimmered with real water. They became part of his daily ritual.
This was not for collectors or critics. It was never for sale. It was Hockney giving form to his own paradise — living inside the very vision he had painted for years.
A splash that doesn’t hang on a wall.
A quiet masterpiece submerged in sunlight.
A reminder that the line between art and life is often just a ripple.
