Breaking News! On June 12, 1926, OKeh Records threw a “Cabaret and Style Show” at the Chicago Coliseum, featuring performances by King Oliver, Bertha “Chippie” Hill, Richard M. Jones, Erskine Tate, and Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this historic event, the Louis Armstrong House Museum will be hosting a special concert on Friday, June 12, 2026, featuring legendary vocalist Catherine Russell backed by Colin Hancock’s Jazz Hounds! The concert starts at 6 p.m. but as a bonus, we’ll have Matthew “Fat Cat” Rivera of the Hot Club of New York there at 5:15 to spin the original 78s of Louis Armstrong’s June 1926 recordings!

Tickets are now available on our website www.louisarmstronghouse.org and at the link in our story—this concert WILL sell out so act fact!

Happy Birthday, Miles Davis, born 100 years ago today! “You know you can’t play anything on a horn that Louis hasn’t played - I mean even modern,” Miles famously said in 1958. “I love his approach to the trumpet; he never sounds bad. He plays on the beat - with feeling. That’s another phrase for swing. I also love the way he sings.” Jack Bradley took this photo of Louis and Miles at the “Louis Armstrong and His Friends” recording date, 56 years ago today.

What a week! It was the 38th annual Pops is Tops, our longest running program at the Louis Armstrong House Museum. We welcomed hundreds of Queens students to the Armstrong House and to the ELMCOR Louis Armstrong Recreation Center to learn about Pops and to take in a scintillating set of music by the great Alphonso Horne and the Gotham Kings! On “Bourbon Street Parade,” the bleachers emptied for a second line we’ll never forget! Thanks to all the musicians, teachers, students, and staff who made it happen (and to Council Member for being there!)

Happy 122nd Birthday to Fats Waller! Few jazz musicians brought more joy to the world than Satch and Fats. Here is a super rare photo of the two legends together at the Chicago Defender’s Bud Billiken pre-Thanksgiving concert for children at the Regal Theater in 1941. Listen to Louis or listen to Fats (or listen to “Satch Plays Fats”) and watch your mood improve immediately!

90 years ago today, Louis Armstrong entered a Decca recording studio with Luis Russell’s Orchestra and recorded SIX classics, enough to be reissued on an old Brunswick EP simply titled “May 18, 1936: A Good Ol’ Session With Satch.” Join us this Saturday, May 23, at the Louis Armstrong Center for a special free Listening Session with Matthew Rivera of the and our own Ricky Riccardi as we’ll play all of the May 18, 1936 sides AND A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN AND UNHEARD ALTERNATE TAKE OF “SWING THAT MUSIC” recently acquired by the Museum!

In this program curated by longtime American Symphony Orchestra member Louis Bruno, the A*O Jazz Ensemble honors Louis Armstrong by performing a selection of his lesser-recorded works, including Cool Cart Blues, Don’t Forget to Mess Around, Hear Me Talkin’ to Ya, If We Never Meet Again, and New Orleans Stomp. Featuring Alphonso Horne (trumpet), Zoe Obadia (saxophone and clarinet), Ron Wilkins (trombone and vocals), Steve Benson (guitar), Louis Bruno (bass), and Kory Grossman (drums).

The American Symphony Orchestra (A*O) is a New York-based American orchestra founded in 1962 by Leopold Stokowski, dedicated to making live orchestral music accessible to all. This program is part of the A*O’s musician-curated Chamber Series, bringing concerts like this one to boroughs throughout NYC.

On May 18, 1936, Louis Armstrong stepped into Decca’s New York City studios to record six unforgettable sides with Luis Russell’s Orchestra, sessions that would become landmarks in the history of jazz.

Join us on May 23 at 1:00 PM for a special Listening Session with Matthew Rivera and Ricky Riccardi, as we celebrate the 90th anniversary of this historic moment. Drawing from the Museum’s Archives, we’ll spin the original 78 rpm records, bringing the sound and spirit of that era to life.

As a special highlight, the Museum will premiere a previously unheard alternate take of “Swing That Music,” newly acquired and presented to the public for the very first time, an exciting moment for jazz lovers and collectors alike.

Guests are also encouraged to bring their own records to help create a lively, communal “Hot Club” atmosphere
