"A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Wearable art evening gowns designed by Nancy Bryant, 1990s and 2000s" is now on display on the 2nd floor of Milam Hall. Serving as a backdrop to Bryant’s designs are paintings by Romantic-era artists. Romanticism was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and flourished until the mid-19th century. It emphasized emotion, imagination, and individualism, often in contrast to the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason and order. A Midsummer Night’s Dream served as inspiration for several artists from the Romantic-era due to its themes of love, enchantment, and the blurring of reality and dreams. The play's fantastical elements, particularly the fairy world, have resonated with artists seeking to explore themes of love, imagination, and the power of the subconscious. Images: Hermia and Helena by Washington Allston, 1818; “Waterfall Garden,” designed by Nancy Bryant, completed in 2000.
