Joe Tonn shared this wonderful photo of the Spirit Lake Ranger Station putting up the flag on the central S shore of Spirit Lake between Spirit Lake Campground and Mount St. Helens Lodge. It was built some time in the 1950s and had a small visitor center, climber register, plus on duty rangers for the USFS & management office. Taken summer 1970. Thank you! MSHB1980

Mount St. Helens from cabin properties above Spirit Lake Lodge on the NW side of Mount St. Helens, a really amazing photo, April 1980 as a small ash/ steam eruption initiated on the N side being able to be captured by the Burgess Family! Courtesy Jerald Burgess. MSHB1980

Lange homestead cabin and new cabin courtesy Burgess Family, Jerald Burgess. December 1978 or somewhere in that timeframe with the snow load on the trees! All of this area was destroyed by the eruption on the NE-N-NW side of Mount St. Helens May 18, 1980 and changed, now regrowing into something new/ different! MSHB1980

One of the last original Lange homestead cabins, located up behind Spirit Lake Lodge off the N Fork Toutle River about 4 1/2 miles away from Mount St. Helens, shared by a wonderful follower, courtesy Jerald Burgess on our Mount St. Helens Before 1980 Group page! Looks about April 1980 weeks before the May 1980 eruption wiped out the entire area. MSHB1980

This is an authentic photo in our collection taken by a guest who stayed at Mount St. Helens Lodge in July, 1954, taken as they walked around. The picture isn't all the clearest, this clearly shows a moment frozen in time. Harry had a lot of customers that drove 46+ miles from Castle Rock up the old SR504 Route 1-R Spirit Lake Highway and often enjoyed staying at the lodge and cabins he and Eddie took care of. Super rare photo, the Spirit Lake Ranger's Station on the S shore of Spirit Lake with drive up area & small parking lot between Harry Truman's Lodge to the W and Spirit Lake Campground to the E, summer 1972. Just amazing, things you will only see here on our page. MSHB1980

Ascending near the summit, summer 1976, note the low amount of snow, very typical for Cascade peaks during the summer months, Mount St. Helens some summers can literally have no snow at all often covered with dust/ ash higher up masking the snow. Snow and glaciers perpetually melt around the mountain flowing into Swift Creek, Loowit Falls, Blue Lake, Muddy River, Pine Creek and others. MSHB1980

Climbers ascend Mount St. Helens on the ENE side on Dog's Head to the left of Sugar Bowl, to the summit. Look at the crevasses, seracs, and glacier formation that filled in after the Kalama dome building phase on the N side of the volcano. Early summer 1976. MSHB1980

Simply one of the clearest best photos and in color/ panoramic of SR504 going past Harry Truman's Mount St. Helens Lodge, Starlight Cafe, his cabins, Spirit Lake, Mount Margaret Backcountry and the hills with Hemlocks/ Douglas firs towering 100+ feet around it! Taken April, 1966. Note the new shakes on the lower part of his lodge, which he was known for hand splitting himself, and the snow boards on the main entrance to keep it out during the very rough winter conditions around the lake where 4-10+ feet fell each year depending on conditions.
