Here’s the advance info: The Museum will open for the summer season on Saturday June 6, 2026. We’ll be open 10am until 4pm on the first Saturday of each month June thru October. Admission is still just $7 for adults and $2 for kids under 10yrs.

We’re still a few months away, so we’ll post a reminder as opening day draws near!

Our 2025 public season is now over, yesterday was a great day and we hosted a lot of first-time visitors in the yard. As the temperatures start to moderate our volunteers will now shift focus to work around the collection. We’ll resume our monthly public schedule in May, hope to see you in 2026!

Here’s where things stood on repainting our L&N caboose when the weather chased us inside in November. All of the lettering and striping was drawn from an original “Family Lines” paint shop book we hold in our collection. We hope to finish the last bits before May, but we think you’ll agree it’s a striking look.

Once we finished with the 1935 C&O flatcar, we didn't stop. This week marks another milestone for our rolling stock collection, the completion of exterior work on our Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive 9408. This diesel-electric switcher was a 1950 product of General Motors (EMD) at Plant 3 in Cleveland, OH. Everybody had a hand over several years in welding up the rust holes, replacing the window glass, rewiring the lighting circuits, and finally painting and lettering the machine. The posed photos here were snapped behind the scenes during a photo rehearsal for our ace photographer (the guy with the skill and the really expensive equipment).

The 1935 Chesapeake & Ohio flatcar features the original drop-shaft "Universal" brand handbrake for use when parked. When the brake gets in the way of loading the car, a hinged pocket is flipped to one side and the shaft and wheel can be lowered to the deck. Two photos show the unit on our car in lowered and raised position. A third image shows the typical version in use on modern flat cars , a pump-handle arrangement that is mounted out of the way below deck level. They're now on the side of the car, eliminating the awkward climb up to the deck and allowing much better leverage to tighten the brake.

Our small corps of volunteers is carefully working on the collection. Last week we reached a milestone in the restoration of our 1935 Chesapeake & Ohio flatcar 80425. Proud volunteer Bill W. poses with the results of his diligent labor with a needle-scaler and paint brush. Bill advises the car is "somewhere" around his own age.

We are pleased to announce the Museum is transferring nearly 200 historic 8x10 documentary photos to the New York Transit Museum . The New York subway images include the conversion of an elevated to a subway line along 6th Avenue near Gimbels Department Store (1938), the construction of the Pitkin Yard maintenance complex (1941), and the rehab of the Culver Line elevated (1954). The NYTM has a great program and staff, and their facility is the best repository for these images we've been keeping safe while searching for a better home. Check out these two samples showing the elevated tracks in front of Gimbels, and then the same area after relocation underground.
