Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County

Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County The Carnegie Museum seeks to inspire curiosity, exploration, and community connection.

The Carnegie Museum is an interdisciplinary museum of history, art, and science. We promote public awareness and appreciation of the history, heritage, and culture of Montgomery County through educational programs, public services, collection, exhibition, preservation, and research and documentation. We are located in Crawfordsville's original Carnegie Library building, which was the first Carnegie Library to open in the state of Indiana, in 1902.

This Memorial Day, we remember the 3rd Battalion of the 139th Field Artillery.

The 139th was first deployed during the Spanish-American War in 1898 attached to the 4th Indiana Infantry. In World War I, the battalion was sent to France, but never entered combat. Returning from the war, the unit was demobilized in 1919 and reinstated as a member of the Indiana National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division in 1922. The 139th served in multiple wars including World War II. Its final deployment was to Iraq in 2009.

This flag represents the courage and sacrifice the soldiers of the 139th Field Artillery Battalion exhibited. It was restored by Deantha “Dede” Wright-Thornburg. She found the flag on an old piece of paneling in the National Guard Armory in Crawfordsville and restored it.

This flag was originally from the Darlington Armory when Service Battery C was formed there in 1947.
