Davenport Homestead

Davenport Homestead The Davenport Homestead is the only preserved pre 1800 yeoman farmer's house in Washington & Tyrrell counties available for visitation. till 3 p.m.

Davenport Homestead is in rural Washington County, North Carolina, near the small town of Creswell. It was built during the 1770's by Daniel Davenport, who served a six month enlistment during the American Revolution. The last Davenport lived in the home until her death in 1975. This descendant lived much like her ancestors did - without running water or electricity. In the late 1990's, other Dave

nport descendants gave the site to Washington County Historical Society. An annual heritage day is celebrated each year. In 2011, events are planned for October 22 from 10 a.m.

Musings.

The neighborhoods surrounding the Davenport Homestead, peopled by families, many of them descended from those who experienced the American Revolution, remind us of rural roots.

Brick homes and wood frame homes, built in the last 50 to 75 years, occupy the land owned by some families for generations.

Here and there, much older dwellings remind us of simpler times.

Around the curve from the homestead, Mount Tabor Baptist Church remains an anchor for the area. Within its walls, the echoes of many voices tell us of the families that have found community in this church.

Next to it is the cemetery. Gravestones offer proof of the cycle of generations that have passed through the area.

Clues, offered in elegant, but stark simplicity, can tell us much about the area, if we are willing to look and listen.

For just a few hours, when the Davenport house was alive with visitors, we were allowed a peek into the past.

There is much to learn from the "old ways."

We saw it was possible to survive, though few of us would want to be forced to do so without the many modern conveniences we have today.

What made it possible for us to live modern lives?

That first step: the American Revolution that gave the country, if not immediately all of its people, independence.

It has been a long journey.

Sometimes a rocky one. But it has always been rocky. We are all the stronger because of the challenges.

Feedback from those who attended yesterday's event was very positive.

We hope you enjoyed the day-AND-making history with us.

Some day you may remember this significant 250 commemoration of the American Revolution, as we portrayed that era and honored Daniel Davenport.

This event took a village to create.
