G503 or Jeeps are easily the most recognizable vehicles of the Second World War. Lightweight, rugged, and mobile the 4x4 Jeep would take troops almost anywhere in any conditions. What it lacked however was protection. The open top lacked any protection for its driver and while many jeeps were outfitted with machine guns, it often meant leaving the gunner exposed on the rear of the vehicle. As early as Sicily GIs got the idea to weld plated armor onto jeeps with the most recognizable being from the recon elements of the 82nd Airborne using removable slanted plates for extra protection. 12 in total were built. Our units Armored jeep however is modeled off of a slightly different design using original photos provided by a spectator and his WWII Veteran father at a local event a few years ago. The armor was never intended to stop small arms, instead like helmets it was designed to give extra protection from Shrapnel. It also gave an extra boost in morale with a false sense of security. This weekend two of our members fielded the twin bazookas. Another field modification that allowed for the jeep to attack dug in emplacements and lightly armored vehicles.
