On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to invite all our FB friends to consider supporting the work of the Culver Historical Society with a membership for 2026. Annual dues, Fundraiser tickets, and gifts underwrite the Society’s efforts “to continue its legacy of keeping history alive.”

In 2025, that meant presenting six public programs (including our joint work with the Culver-Union Township Public Library on Stories and Stones), leading staff in-service days for the CUTPL and for our colleagues at the Marshall County Historical Society, and taking AP US History students from the Culver Academies on a walking tour.

The Society’s Maxinkuckee Village Committee installed a new historical marker, to be dedicated this summer, at the northwest corner of the Maxinkuckee Country Club, while our Heritage Park continues to be a central part of the Main Street business district.

Board member Jeff Kenney and our Administrator, James Mechling-Smith, have made recordings of many Society events available on the Society’s YouTube channel, at: https://www.youtube.com//videos

For 2026, the Program Committee plans a May program on the cultural history of Maxinkuckee Village, and one in June by Col. Kelly Jordan on the subject of his new biography, Culver Superintendent Brigadier General Leigh R. Gignilliat. In July, Jeff and I will present about how Culver celebrated the Fourth on previous major anniversaries, while the August program will focus on pioneer ladies of Union Township whose fathers were Revolutionary War patriots. Stories and Stones will return in September.

We also plan to introduce two new physical publications for next summer: Shannon Rezek, Jeff Kenney, and I are working on a historical exploration activity book for kids, while Steve Sturman, Jeff, and I will be preparing a glossy magazine for grown-ups, including feature articles, a look back over last year’s programs, and a President’s report on last year’s business. We hope to have both items out by Memorial Day, 2026.

The Board has adopted a three-level dues structure for the year:

$50: Household—includes the new Society almanac, the children’s activity/exploration book, and a $10 discount on tickets to the August Fundraiser.

$25: Educator—a special rate for teachers, with the same benefits as Household membership.

Free: Student—includes member’s choice of one or the other of the two new publications.

You can join using PayPal or Venmo with our secure on-line registration form at https://www.culverahs.com/membership/: or, if you prefer, send a check to Culver Historical Society, P. O. Box 125, Culver, Indiana 46511, and (if you are not a renewing member) provide the following information:

A quick reminder that THIS SATURDAY, Dec. 6, we hope to see everyone at our tour of several of Culver's historic churches! A bus will be provided or feel free to drive, starting at Wesley United Methodist Church at 10:30 AM!

At 10:30 AM on Saturday, Dec. 6, as part of the town-wide ushering in of the holiday season, the Culver Historical Society will host a driving tour of several historic churches of the Culver area, concluding with a brief Christmas sing-along reception with refreshments provided by Wesley United Methodist Church.

The event will commence at Wesley church, 511 School Street in Culver. A bus will be provided to take attendees to each of the several churches included in the tour, though attendees are also welcome to drive their own vehicles to each site.

Church communities in the Culver area date to the 19th century and include a variety of denominations and styles of worship and architecture. During the event, the Very Rev. Dr. John Houghton and Jeff Kenney, both of the Society, will invite attendees to join them in the sanctuary of each church, where they will present a brief history of the congregation and architecture.

As mentioned, the tour will end back at Wesley United Methodist Church, where all are invited to stay for refreshments and a brief singing of Christmas carols.

All are welcome to this free event. Questions may be directed to [email protected].

Join us this Saturday, Aug. 16: for a one-of-a-kind program taking the audience through Culver's rare and little-known musical heritage, led by Major Bill Browne, retired Culver Academies Bandmaster! "Underneath the Maxinkuckee Moon: Culver in Music" begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Culver Academies Legion Memorial Building.

You may know "Cheer for Old Culver," "Maxinkuckee Moon," or "The Culver Song"--but have you danced to the "Mai-Fan Waltz"? Maj. Browne will describe and perform examples of the rich musical history of town, gown, and lake. The public is warmly invited to this free event, which will be followed by the Annual Meeting of the Society.
