History is the result of what people do. Doesn't stand still. In that sense, we can be confident that history is being made this weekend in one of our community's oldest commercial buildings.

Absolute perfect weather today for ACHS’s annual elementary school tours at the Union Grove One-Room Schoolhouse. Today we hosted John Humbird Elementary School, second grade classes.

We are always so thankful for the support of the Union Grove Campground for sharing their serene, well cared for campground with our students. They do rent their peaceful space for non-alcohol events.

Shout out to volunteers and staff for creating such a special program for the kiddos. Thanks Dylan Stumbaugh, Sherry Thompson, Peg Neef, and Howell’s Sunoco for making our day.

Drum roll please. ACHS is pleased to share some great images from the Official Fifth Edition Great Gatsby Gala Photo Gallery. It goes without saying that your Historical Society is grateful beyond words for everyone in our community who helped make our 2026 annual fund raiser at the 1911 F. Brooke Whiting House the best edition yet!

"Gatsby" has earned a one-word reference because it captures a very important part of our historical society's philosophy. History isn't something that just happens, it is about what people do and the imprint that leaves on generations that follow. Our version of "living history" is delivered in as many ways as we can muster, with the support of our members, patrons, sponsors, volunteers, staff and leadership.

Gatsby is a return to the Spring of 1929. "What could possibly go wrong" right? The home of F. Brooke and Ruth Whiting is literally where the party happens, and they were, among many other things, owners of one of Cumberland's brewing companies, and our party assumes there is great optimism that the end of Prohibition is at hand.

Fast forward to modern times and our guests are enjoying the unique, astute collections of F. Brooke Whiting Jr and his sister Anne, assembled and preserved in their parent's home and donated to ACHS in early 2000's upon Brooke's passing.

This year's event confirmed to us that Gatsby really is "the best of both worlds" - a creative social gathering in the style of Cumberland's heyday and a good way to help secure a sustaining commitment to a mission founded in 1937 to pursue history education and preservation.

Jessica Grapes was this year's official photographer and we think she nicely captured the excitement of the evening.
