Look who came to visit on Monday! Michael Kline - fun fact - he lived in Western Mass and made pots that sold at PINCH also and worked at Spoleto Restaurant Northampton. He was one of the potters who was here in the 80’s and one of the original potters who started together the beginning of Stonepool Pottery with Mark Shapiro and Sam Taylor. When the 19th century mill building that is now Project Art was originally for sale - he was one of the many who looked at its possibilities but a session with Michael Simon at Penland School of Crafts .. not sure about the exact chronology but he moved to NC.

In 2004 Sergei Isupov and Leslie Ferrin went on a tour with Mark Shapiro, Michael McCarthy and Bill Kelly - the rest is history. Sergei and my family moved in fall of 2006.

20 years later … Michael Kline (still living in NC) was teaching at Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program and participating in Asparagus Valley Pottery Trail as a guest of Donna Mcgee at East Street Clay Studios in Hadley, MA

So great to reconnect and reflect on the stops and starts, the hairpin turns and how we continue to do things that bring us together.

Joe Wheaton’s sculpture and other signs of spring

In January, sculptor Joe Wheaton closed up his shop and began a new chapter in his life. As he departed, he handed over this sculpture to us for safe keeping at Project Art. We love it!

Signs of spring, slowly the snow melts, the mice rejected alliums appeared, crocus, daffodils bloomed, blood root popped up and the peepers began signing.

Grayson here! I’m the archivist at Ferrin Contemporary at Project Art. You can often find me bouncing around Western Massachusetts in museums and libraries, whether it’s sorting books or moving boxes of documents. I’ve been working here for a few months like an archeologist digging into boxes filled with files of ephemera and printed material related to 40+ years of gallery history in Western Massachusetts and beyond.

With multiple locations, hundreds exhibitions, years of art fairs, now based all in one place at Project Art in the heart of Cummington’s Cultural District, I’m starting to connect the dots between thousands of artists, collections and developing a timeline for late 20th and early 21st century ceramics. Throughout the next few months, I’ll be posting some of my favorite finds from our archives and sharing some stories, bringing to life memories from 1979 to the present. Let us know if you have any ideas of what you’d like us to feature, or if you’d like to learn more about any part of our history!

This November, Project Art and The Center for the Study of Figurative Ceramics invite you into an immersive, two-day encounter with two of contemporary ceramics’ most influential figural sculptors: Cristina Córdova and Sergei Isupov. Participants are invited to spend the weekend observing the two artists’ alternating sessions, learn from their interactions and participate in active conversations between artists and participants. This is a great opportunity for sculptors interested in expanding their skills and making connections with the two artists and other participants.

Each artist, distinct in vision and art practice, will lead focused, live demonstrations of their studio techniques while in dialogue with one another and the participants.

Thank you for attending our RAKU Firing Event this weekend with and Kadri Pärnamets! Community members from across Western, MA gathered at Project Art to glaze and fire pieces in the RAKU kiln one by one. Each piece resulted in unexpected textures and patterns from the quick-burning kiln, with participants getting to see the process in real time.

Across the street, Emmett Leader offered his hand-made and transportable oven for a breadmaking demo and activity.

Later in the afternoon, guests ventured into the Summer Gallery for an artist talk and reception of Kadri Pärnamets’ newest exhibition, MURAKA. Kadri spoke about her work as it relates to her life along the Westfield River.

These events took place during the RiverFest. Thank you to the Cummington Cultural District for organizing the event, to Emmett and his oven for feeding and educating, and to all who attended the firing and reception.
