Thanks to everyone who attended the Council's and the Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library 's inaugural Story Board Walk Tour and Tea party. The weather was windy, wild, and cold, but we had a few intrepid attendees who braved the elements, and we made the tour portion as short as possible. You can follow the story walk boards any time, and we encourage you to do so! Mariella Ostroski made sure we had delicious treats, beautifully presented at the tea party at the end of the tour.
The boards were a collaborative effort between Library Director Rosemary Winters, who successfully applied for a grant from the R. K. Mellon Family Foundation, Local History Librarian Mariella Ostroski headed up the project, the Council’s executive director Mark Mac Nish provided the images and did the graphic work, and Librarian Christine Brush helped write the text.

Family History Day 1776

On June 6, 2026, from 10 am to 3 pm (rain date June 7) on the Village Green in Cutchogue, the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council & Museums will hold its fourth annual Family History Day, this year with a 1776 theme. It’s centered on the 3rd New York Regiment, which will be reenacting drills & recreating a Revolutionary War encampment.
There will be colonial cooking demonstrations with food cooked over an open flame from 18th-century recipes. See examples of colonial textile making, including spinning, weaving, and embroidery. Learn about the local Corchaug Indian tribe through hands-on instruction from Tony Valderrama of the Wilderness Traveling Museum and see how wampum was made. The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library will provide colonial games, three musical groups will perform colonial-era music, and, of course, we will offer tours of all our historic buildings on the Village Green. This will also be the grand opening of two new temporary exhibits. “North Fork in the Revolution,” in the Old House, and “America Celebrates its First One Hundred Years,” in the Wickham House, which includes objects from the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.
Bring the whole family and have fun while learning about your local history. We strongly encourage everyone to come in period costume to get into the spirit of the day! (Suggested donation $5.00) For questions, email [email protected]. We will be a stop on the North Fork Revolutionary War Trail. Get your Suffolk County 250th passbook stamped on-site by The Cutchogue New Suffolk Historical Society & Museums.

Read about the colonial era barn loom that is in our collection, how it was reassembled and installed, with comments by an expert in barn looms. The barn loom is on display and can be seen on tours when our season opens on June 6, from 1-4, Fri., Sat., and Sun. through September.

In February of this year, Kathryn Wojciechowski of the Old School Wool and Weaving Center in South Otselic, New York, visited our barn to see the weaving loom and tools in our collection. Although her specialty is 18th- and 19th-century tools, techniques, traditions, and textiles, her real passion i...
