GRAFFENBERG MEDICAL SCHOOL
Dr Phillip Madison Shepard (1812-1861) Find out what happened to the founding doctor and soon later the school.
You will want to hear our quarterly speaker this Sunday. Dadeville's own Harold Banks will be telling of Alabama's first medical school and the local doctors associated with it. Harold will be showing some of Dr Shepard's medical tools, appointment books, costs to attend, diplomas etc. Harold is a descendant of Dadeville's famous Dr Banks.
Our meeting will be at the Tallapoosa County Museum in Dadeville, located at 212 South Broadnax street at 2:00 pm. Light refreshments will be available after Harold's presentation. Our news letter is shown below.

A TYPICAL WORD OF ADVICE IN 1935. "BE READY!"
Spring is here and summer is near. Be sure that you have a reliable "ice man" lined up to keep your "ice box" serviced about twice a week by bringing huge blocks of ice into your house. The "ice box" was just like a modern day "Igloo" cooler. No electricity needed. The melted ice was caught and enjoyed as lemonade with ice chips for special guests in the hot months. No fan, just natural circulation. The walls of the box were insulated with sawdust. At the museum we have a beautiful 1930's ice box on display. I place 2 gallon jugs of frozen water in it every Saturday morning since Dadeville does not have an ice man anymore. :) We also have pics of the old ice plant that was in Dadeville. It was right beside where the HB/City library is now.

Roy Mathis, a past president of our museum, brought this photo to us last week. It's true that the two men have no direct ties to Tallapoosa county, but we all feel like they were a major part of the lives of the people in our county... I wonder where the "tater" chips were ? (Some people won't know what that means.)

I WONDER IF THERE ARE ANY LEFT: I think this is/was one of what was called a Russell cabin. I dont know if there are any left and what type of utilities (heat, water, sewage) they might have had. And who could get them, and the price of renting one. I'd heard that Russell supervisors could get one for about $100/year and that some similar new ones are being built. I bet sleeping on that large screen porch was relaxing, listening to the tree frogs and owls. Can anyone help with info ? Sometimes the subject comes up at the museum and I need the info. Thanks to whoever can help out.

THE CREEKS WERE ALREADY FIGHTING AMONG THEMSELVES:
Hundreds of "lower" Creeks fought with Jackson's men against the "upper" Creeks. Coffee's men actually charged before the order was given. It was 5 hours of pure hell on earth. It has been said that this was the day the country changed ownership.

AN INTERESTING ITEM:
Here is one of the many maps we have at the museum. It shows the routes that the Federal troops took through Alabama in an effort to cripple the South during the civil war. It lists the generals and the towns they tore through, burning homes, killing livestock and destroying food crops both in gardens and and storage areas. Rousseau is the one who came through Tallapoosa county (the green route) on the way to tear up the railroads in Lee county, cutting of supply lines for the confederacy. He then joined the demonic Gen Sherman for their famous "march to the sea," through Atlanta, burning and looting with no regard for human life. It was a very dark time for the Alabama. We have a large section of war memorabilia with many beautiful uniforms. We are open every Saturday 10-4, and its free! 214 N Broadnax downtown Dadeville.

ALMOST A HUNDRED YEARS OLD:
This little 1930s treasure came from the home of Sheriff and Mrs Cliffton (Cliff) Corprew. He was sheriff in the 40s. She lived in their house next door to me when I bought my place in 1976. I had been told that Cliff had all the new electrical things available when he was alive. This heater is a WESIX 1250 watt made in Seatle, Washington. I use it occasionally as a novelty when people come by in the winter. Made of cast iron and sheet metal, not plastic like all the $14.99 ones at the big stores. No fan to wear out, a vented top lets all that soothing heat flow out. I saw one on Ebay for $160. I am thinking about donating it to the Tallapoosa County Museum in Dadeville. I am Danny Hayes
