With one foot in reality and one in a dreamlike state, British artist Joseph Carway has devised an aesthetic that is familiar, naive and slightly unsettling.
Residing in remote South Norfolk, England, this painter and sculptor embraces the calm landscape to help regulate his “regularly perplexed brain”— a mind that has led him to craft his current exhibition, “Fuzzy Felt,” for Galleri Urbane.

Encompassing dreaming sleepers, self-portraits of self-portraits, and repetitive cartoony profiles, his expressive portraits have an innocent appeal that recalls the early years of school, when every child identifies as an artist. Formerly an accomplished tattooist (a profession he embraced because it was the closest thing to an art career he could imagine), Carway says the industry became a “symbolic minefield” when repeating imagery made a familiar design devoid of any meaning at all.

Joseph Carway — ‘Fuzzy Felt’

Galleri Urbane is pleased to announce Fuzzy Felt, an upcoming solo exhibition by England-based artist Joseph Carway. This marks the artist’s first solo show with the gallery following two successful art fairs, and group show inclusion.

An excerpt from the essay by writer Eve Hill-Agnus, which accompanies the exhibition:

You must get close to Joseph Carway’s work to enter his world, which is ever so gently bewildering. The dimensions—often plywood the size of an A4 sheet of paper—lend themselves to such intimacy. A vestige from his earliest days of sketching out ideas as tattoo flash art, the size is also pragmatic formally. Within the bounds of its surface, Carway creates intimacy: like watching a tiny television set with your face one inch from the screen, or a condensed, private theater staged for an audience of one.

You may call it folk art, or art brut, or naive art if you would like to trace kinship. Carway does indeed cherish found objects and collect old folk pieces, finding them refreshingly simple and unaffected. He admires the rudimentary toy a parent makes for a child, its unskilled roughness paired with intuition. He admires that a tattoo can be read as folksy and avant garde in its own secret way—the way ink softens and spreads into ambiguous blurs fascinates him as much as the tattoo’s power to convey ideas from a small box of symbolic tricks. He admires, too, the work of the French Nabi painter Edouard Vuillard: the flatness of pattern, the condensing of textures in a small space, just as Carway’s own work compresses a scene until there is no longer a difference between the figure and the field it stands in.

‘(Not) Samurai (Not) Cowboy’

Galleri Urbane is thrilled to welcome Japanese artist Shinya Azuma to Texas for an upcoming residency at the Augustus Owen Foundation following with a solo exhibition ‘(Not) Samurai (Not) Cowboy’. This marks the artist’s first solo show with the gallery, in partnership with Cohju Gallery based in Kyoto, Japan.

Azuma’s paintings center on the human figure, depicting moments of vulnerability, hesitation, and quiet psychological tension. Through vivid color fields and simplified compositions, he portrays individuals caught in unguarded and often awkward situations. Rather than heroic figures, his subjects embody a contemporary condition shaped by uncertainty and self-awareness. Balancing humor and discomfort, Azuma’s works reflect a generation navigating a world where traditional ideals of success and certainty have gradually lost their force.

Today we’re highlighting gallery artist Stephen D’Onofrio 🍊 He was commissioned to create art for the cover of D.K. Furutani’s debut novel, ‘When Mikan Road Was Ours’, now on the shelves of Barnes & Noble.

D’Onofrio’s thematic image-making is broadly characterized by an interest in the home decor market, the mass commodification of art, and the generic visual language that accompanies commercial design. His paintings explore the relationship between physical spaces and the objects we fill them with. Often alluding to typical domestic decor and household ornaments, his canvases make these inherently empty objects into simplified symbols and patterns that can then be rearranged and compressed to carry a formal sensibility. The “Produce(d) Paintings” series serves as an historic exemplar of still-life painting that is as old as the medium itself.

Currently, D’Onofrio addresses the idea of painting as ornament, incorporating stock subjects of landscape, still life, and portraiture becoming knickknacks into his lexicon. The painter distills, consolidates, and appropriates the overwhelming amount of generic design aesthetic in the commercial decor market. Rather than fight the inherent kitschiness of this visual language, he embraces the imagery so his canvases can, in turn, become a critique of the subject it represents.

Today for we are highlighting the work of Donald Martiny.

It was our pleasure to work with our clients and big thanks to Oscar and his team at Capsule Fine Art Services

Donald Martiny works with paint, color, and form; elements from the history of painting often referring to color or manner of paint application from diverse areas on the art-historical timeline. While he highly values the history of painting he does not feel beholden to it.

Martiny’s current exploration is in the presence and power of gesture made to exist forever in the present. What he wants to happen is for the space between the painting and the viewer to become activated, encouraging the viewer to form a relationship and interact with the work. Beyond an observational viewing experience, he is encouraging engagement and participation with the painting. By eschewing the ground (canvas or panel) altogether, the painting directly addresses the viewer and relates more dynamically to the space around it. These massive brushstrokes offer a potent exchange inviting the viewer closer, even inside the work. The intimacy is instantaneous and intensely visceral. Martiny’s paintings are not a depiction of an experience, rather they are the experience.

Congrats to gallery artist Drea Cofield on her recent feature in Pl***oy Magazine! In 2023 Galleri Urbane was the first gallery to exhibit works from Drea’s ‘Selfie Project’, titled “Send Nudes.” Gallery Director Ree Willaford was set to exhibit Cofield’s plein air paintings, but once she saw the Selfie paintings, she said “this is your show!”

What began as trust between friends — a n**e selfie, offered and received — became paintings that ask you to slow down and actually look, in an economy built for the scroll.

“When I spend days translating a selfie into paint, I’m forced to notice everything that speed normally erases – the strange color shifts in skin, the architecture of a room, awkward gestures, emotional hesitation, little accidents that suddenly become meaningful,” Cofield says.
