Lisa’s studio space.

Each of the Resident Artists at ALG Fine Art has a dedicated studio space where they can create alongside each other and in view of gallery visitors. They also hang some of their favorite artworks in their space as inspiration.

Here, our Gallery Manager, Anna Curnes, highlights the pieces in Lisa Moriarty’s space, the ethereal waves Lisa has made with silk dipped in encaustic wax. She has artistically created movement, flow, and a soft place to land.

As our new Resident Artist, Lisa’s solo art show “Breathing Space” is featured in the gallery now until June 27th.

Explore these pieces and more by dropping into ALG Fine Art Wednesday to Saturday between 11 am and 4 pm or booking a personalised shopping experience with our Gallery Manager, Skylar Craver. (Links in bio)

*SOLD* “Interval” by Lisa Moriarty.

This was the first artwork to sell at the Opening Night of “Breathing Space.” We can see why the collector couldn’t leave without it. Lisa Moriarty has used her distinct artistic methods to create a piece with movement and stillness, repeated patterns and unexpected variations, translucency and opaqueness. Both the details when viewed up close and the impression when seen from afar draw the viewer in.

With this, we have covered all the artworks in “Breathing Space.” You’re invited to see the full collection at ALG Fine Art until June 27th. For now, here are a few words from Lisa Moriarty about the impact of the body of work as a whole.

“This collection explores the ocean as a space of memory, transformation, and connection, shaped by family histories, personal experience, and the ever-changing Northern California coast. Through encaustic, fabric, and layered translucent materials, the work captures fleeting coastal moments: shifting tides, fog in transition, churning water, and the quiet stillness held within them.

“Rooted in lived experiences, walking the shoreline, gathering sea glass, observing tide pools, and sharing intergenerational stories, these pieces reflect both the physical landscape and the emotional imprint it leaves behind. Materials are fused, stitched, and layered to echo the rhythms of the sea, allowing light, depth, and movement to emerge organically.

“Rather than depicting specific places, the work preserves impressions, fragments of color, texture, and atmosphere. Together, the pieces form a visual language of water, holding both motion and stillness, fragility and resilience, and inviting the viewer into a contemplative space of reflection and quiet immersion.”

“To The Surface IV” by Lisa Moriarty.

What makes “Breathing Space” so captivating is the use of encaustic wax to create layers, patterns and dimension. There is always something happening beneath the surface which we can only notice when we pause, take a breath and take it all in.

The artwork invites us to slow down and rewards us for doing so. The rhythm, movement and layered storytelling are perfectly captured by the final piece in her “To The Surface” series.

Lisa shares more about her creative process in the quote below.

“Although each piece begins through the same basic method, the fact that it is entirely handmade over long periods means variation naturally occurs. Small differences accumulate, and eventually patterns begin to appear, sometimes intentional, sometimes unexpected. That slow repetition becomes part of the visual language of the work itself.
The finished product cannot be the focus while I am working; the process has to remain the focus. Each small element carries very little on its own, but together they begin to create movement, density, translucency, and form.”

“Resides in a Tidepool: Circle” by Lisa Moriarty.

Lisa Moriarty’s original series “Resides in a Tidepool” is one of the most memorable installations in her collection. Each of the 12 panels offers a glimpse into a tidepool, created by the gradual and intentional layering of encaustic wax. In this variation, Lisa has used the same technique to create the movement and flow of a tidepool on a circular panel.

You can see even more of the details of encaustic wax layers, how the colors merge and move together to form wave-like patterns. Lisa explains her creative process in her artist statement below.

“Created using encaustic medium, beeswax combined with pigment, this work is painted onto wood panels to evoke the dynamic, ever-changing environment of active tide pools. The surface is built through layered applications of wax in varying shades of blue and white, each layer fused with heat to create depth and cohesion.

“A torch is used to gently manipulate the wax, allowing it to open and separate into delicate, laced patterns. Within these formations, tiny clear windows emerge, revealing glimpses beneath the surface. These translucent pockets echo the experience of looking into tide pools, where foamy, circulating water forms a shifting veil over intricate, living worlds below.

“The interplay between opacity and transparency becomes central to the piece. Areas of dense, milky wax contrast with moments of clarity, mimicking the way turbulent water both obscures and reveals. Light interacts with these layers, catching on the textured surface and moving through the clearer passages, creating a sense of depth and quiet motion.”

“To The Surface III” by Lisa Moriarty.

This piece is a soft place to land and let the eyes wander across the surface. The shapes, colors, translucency and opacity have been formed gradually, layer by hand-crafted layer. Patterns can be found in the variability, just like when gazing up at the clouds or watching the surface of the water. It brings nature’s meditativeness to the gallery and, if you choose, your home.

Lisa shares what inspires her to create such peaceful pieces in the following quote.

“What draws me into the studio is often a combination of color, light, memory, and a quiet internal pull toward making. Sometimes it begins with noticing how light moves through something translucent, how shadows soften an edge, or how one color shifts when layered against another. At other times, it begins more emotionally, a need to slow down, organize my thoughts, or respond to a feeling that is difficult to put into words.”

“Traces of the Ocean Delight” by Lisa Moriarty.

Just as the ocean makes its mark on the landscape, shaping the shoreline, the ocean has made its mark on Lisa, as a person and as an artist. Some of her most formative and fond memories of loved ones take place by the ocean. More than a backdrop, the ocean serves as a haven for reconnecting with the past, letting go of worries in the present, and reflecting on the future with hope.

This salvaged wood and encaustic wax infusion invites us all to sift through our memories of the ocean and return to the delight of being by the water. There is so much meaning behind the use of materials here as Lisa explores in her artist statement.

“This body of work combines salvaged farm wood from the old orchards of Silicon Valley, once known as the Valley of Heart’s Delight, with encaustic surfaces built through slow accretion. The wood, marked by age, labor, and weather, carries the imprint of an agricultural past that has largely disappeared beneath technological expansion.

“Layers of molten wax are applied and fused over time, echoing the rhythms of tidal accumulation along the nearby California coast. This process mirrors natural cycles of deposit and erosion, allowing each surface to become a record of duration, memory, and environmental change.

“By uniting these materials and methods, the work bridges two landscapes that hold personal significance: the cultivated inland valley and the shifting coastal edge. The pieces exist as quiet convergences, where growth, loss, and transformation are held in tension, and where histories of land use are preserved through material and touch.”

“To The Surface II” by Lisa Moriarty.

The next in this series of 8x8” encaustic on wood panel pieces, in “To The Surface II” Lisa has brought together a colour palette of blues. There are dark blues like deep water or the night sky. There are bright blues like the sky on a sunny day. There’s a hint of turquoise blue like the light reflecting on the sea.

Lisa’s use of blue is an artistic choice as she explains in this quote.

“Color is central, especially blue, which appears often because of its connection to memory and place. For me, blue carries calm, safety, and nostalgia, rooted in long-standing impressions of the California coast, the openness of shoreline, water, horizon, and coastal light.

“The work is less about describing a specific landscape and more about translating that sense of rhythm, suspension, breath, and slow accumulation through material.”

“Fade at the Orchard’s Edge” by Lisa Moriarty.

One of Lisa’s salvaged wood pieces, this is a masterclass in the use of texture. In “Fade at the Orchard’s Edge,” we can see the raw texture of the wood, transporting us to the earthy atmosphere of an orchard. On the other side, we have layered encaustic wax that ripples and waves like water. Then, in the middle, marrying the two is white encaustic wax which enhances the pattern of the wood beneath, thick and foamy like the peaks of waves.

It’s rich visual storytelling that holds the viewer's attention as we explore the depth and dimension.

Lisa tells us about the story behind this series in her artist statement.

“These works are built from salvaged orchard wood gathered in the region now known as Silicon Valley, once called the Valley of Heart’s Delight. The wood bears the weight of time, weathered, worn, and marked by a landscape that has largely vanished.

Over these surfaces, encaustic wax is layered in quiet accretions, a process that echoes the slow gathering of salt, sand, and memory along the California coast. Each layer settles like a tide, building a surface that is both luminous and obscured, holding traces of what came before.

The work moves between two geographies: orchard and ocean, cultivation and erosion. In their meeting, the pieces become vessels of remembrance, where land, labor, and water converge, and where the past continues to surface through material.”

“Breakers” by Lisa Moriarty.

Pause, breathe and rest your eyes on the soft waves of “Breakers.” Lisa has used encaustic-painted fabric carefully hand-assembled on a wood panel to create a welcoming landscape. The rhythm and flow mirror the waves of the ocean, lulling us into peacefulness.

Lisa shares more about the power of this piece in her artist statement.

"Constructed from larger pieces of fabric painted with encaustic, this work is shaped, formed, and layered onto a wood panel to create a richly textured surface. The fabric remains visible in its dimensionality, with each layer contributing to a sense of movement and depth.

The overlapping pieces emphasize texture, evoking the irregular, shifting surface of choppy seawater. Variations in tone, deep indigo, all white, and translucent passages of lighter blue, suggest the changing currents and the way light moves through water.

Together, these elements create a dynamic interplay between structure and fluidity, capturing the ever-changing nature of the sea."
