We are proud to be partnering with the Bandy Heritage Center For Northwest Georgia and the Prater's Mill Foundation to present the Catherine Evans Whitener Demonstration and Workshop Series in Heritage Arts. This series seeks to commemorate the legacy of Catherine Evans Whitener—the founding mother of Northwest Georgia’s tufted textile industry—and similar major figures of the Appalachian Craft Revival by fostering the skills which made them famous among the next generation of learners and makers. Whether it is making pottery like Bill Gordy or candlewick tufting like Catherine Evans Whitener, the Catherine Evans Whitener Demonstration and Workshop Series will allow audiences and participants to experience the unique folkways and traditions which shaped the material and cultural stories of Northwest Georgia’s many communities.

Wright Hotel in Chatsworth is having a sale:

Fundraiser/Flea Market at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church
A "Half Price/Best offer" flea market is set for Friday and Saturday, September 13 & 14 from 8-2 at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church, a property of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. All proceeds go to the continued preservation of the historic building, constructed in 1875. It's the oldest structure in Murray County today that was designed for public use, and it is part of the Spring Place National Register Historic District.
Even after another successful Spring Place Festival last month, the main room of the restored church is still full of collectibles, glassware, household items, Christmas and seasonal decorations, toys, records, vintage and newer things. The fundraising event also features a used book sale that includes paperbacks, 5/$1 and hard covers at $1 each. Various historical society publications will also be available for purchase including the newest DVDs based on the popular "Murray on my Mind" class taught by Tim Howard and others for decades. The DVDs are 3/$30.
The Historical Society greatly appreciates the donors, volunteers, businesses and customers who make preservation possible. This will be the final sale at the Old Church for 2024. From late September through next May, the building will once again be available for club meetings, showers, birthday events, reunions, tours, and other gatherings. FROM THE WRIGHT HOTEL IN CHATSWORTH

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD: DONATIONS NEEDED TO HELP MEET DEDUCTIBLE.
Thank you to everyone who shared messages of encouragement following last weekend's lightning strike.
We are working with our insurance company to cover the costs of repairs; HOWEVER, there is a $5,000 deductible we will need to work hard to meet.

This year, we have financed a new roof on the hotel and new storm windows on the ground floor. These investments have left our budget a little thin; however, we hope the generosity of our community and proceeds from our upcoming Porch Sale in Oct. will keep us on track to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.
The Wright Hotel is a property of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, a non-profit organization.

Tea With Mom Returns to Historic Wright Hotel

The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society will host "Tea with Mom" at the Wright Hotel in Chatsworth on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Seatings will be at noon and at 2:00 p.m.

Tea with Mom is an annual event which features an assortment of tasty refreshments served in the dining and living rooms of the Hotel which was built in 1909. North Murray students traditionally are on hand to assist visitors with hats, hair, and make up as well as serving the tables. There will also be photos and short lessons about tea party etiquette. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your seating.

Tickets for the Tea are $20 for mom and a guest with any additional guests $5 each. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased from the Clerk's office at the Murray County Courthouse or at Pat's Antiques on Market Street in downtown Chatsworth. Seating is limited, so reservations should be made early. The deadline is Thursday, May 9. Proceeds from the event go toward the continued preservation of the Wright Hotel, a property of the Historical Society twice listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Clean-up Hamilton House! 701 Chattanooga Ave, Dalton, GA 30720
Saturday morning, April 22, from 9:30 to 12:30.
Many of you are aware that WMHS had a homeless camp behind the historic Hamilton House. The Dalton police had to run them off twice. Unfortunately, the campers left a huge mess.
The good news is that the Conasauga group is going to help us clean up the mess on Saturday morning, April 22, from 9:30 to 12:30. Those of you who are able to help are encouraged to join us. Put on your rubber boots or waders! We hope to see you there!
