River Gallery Fine Art

River Gallery Fine Art 19th - 21st Century American and European paintings, with a special focus on Maine artists.

Located in Damariscotta, Maine since 1995, River Gallery presents a diverse collection of American and European paintings from the 19th century to the present day. Areas of interest include modernist landscape paintings of Maine, paintings from the artists of Monhegan Island, and American expatriate painting in Venice. The gallery also displays work from select contemporary painters with a connection to coastal Maine.

A student of Robert Henri, Carl Sprinchorn first visited the landscapes and lumber camps of northern Maine with his friend Marsden Hartley.

"Lone Pine", by Jim Murphy of Ashfield, Massachusetts.

A native of Norwood, Massachusetts, Jim Murphy was born May 25, 1947. Encouraged by his parents, he absorbed himself with drawing as a child, and as a young man studied at Massachusetts College of Art. He received his BFA in 1969 with emphasis on painting and illustration.

A foggy abstraction of the Island Inn on Monhegan, by Murray Hantman (1904-1999).

Murray Hantman entered the Art Students League in 1928, where he studied with Thomas Hart Benton and Jan Matulka. He assisted Benton with the murals for the New School for Social Research in New York and worked on WPA projects through the 1930s.

Ernest Lawson exhibited with Robert Henri and "The Eight" in 1908. An impressionist at heart, he favored landscapes to street scenes.
