The Stokes County Historical Society proudly presents “The Spainhour Patriots” by Verna Spainhour Brewer on Sunday, April 19th at 2:00pm at King Central Park. The program will be in the upper shelter near the cabin with an open house/tour of the Spainhour Cabin following the presentation. This is the third event in the America 250 series for SCHS this year. Verna is a direct descendant of Michael Spainhour who served in the Revolutionary War Militia from 1776-1781. Verna was honored in October 2025 for her exceptional work in the field of historical preservation and community service by the Wachovia Historical Society by receiving the prestigious Archie K. Davis Award. Verna’s dedication to the 1774 pioneer cabin of Johann (John) Jacob Spaenhauer and to the Muttenz Descendants, Inc (MDI) has provided invaluable educational and historical resources to this area. Verna has enthusiastically shared her passion of her family’s heritage through educational tours organized by SCHS for many years. Please join SCHS for this free event!

America 250 – “Between Two Sons”

On Sunday, March 15 at 2:00pm at the King Public Library (101 Pilot View Dr. King, NC), The Stokes County Historical Society presents: “Daniel Boone during the American Revolution: Between Two Sons” by award-winning author Randell Jones. Come hear the exciting life episodes of America’s pioneer hero during the tumultuous years of our founding era. Boone initiates the westward movement to create Kentucky, but then also keeps in rhythm to begin a new free nation with the American Revolution back east. Mr. Jones is a master storyteller…much like Ol’ Daniel Boone himself…relating Boone’s exploits of discovery woven into the fabric of American history and lore…often with Boone’s own personal tragedies as a part of the story.
Mr. Jones will have books available for sale and signing at this event. A portion of the proceeds from each of “In the Footsteps of Daniel Boone” second edition books sold at this event will be donated to the SCHS. A photographic journey depicting Boone’s amazing life will be shared by Mr. Jones as part of the presentation. Jones’ stories and pictures paint an unforgettable portrait of an American Patriot and frontiersman!
This program is part of SCHS’s America 250 series and is free and open to the public.
