Our Shaker Village display helps illustrate what life was like for this community, which was located about 13 miles down the road.

The last member, Sister Mary Settles, passed away in 1923, ending the Shakers' official time there but not their enduring legacy!

Look at these lovely little chandeliers in our room boxes, adding a shimmer and elegance to our more opulent spaces!

The earliest chandeliers hailed from the Medieval period and were made of wood with candles affixed - sounds a bit dangerous...and messy!

In fact, the word "chandelier" is borrowed from an Old French word meaning "candle holder."

Modern chandeliers first arrived with gas lights in the mid 19th century and then electric by the late 1800s. By the early 20th century, electric chandeliers were the go-to. Bright idea! πŸ’‘
